Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2012, Early Saturday Evening (Part 1)

With things back to normal - or as normal as Fandom ever got - preparations for graduation had gone into full swing. The ceremony was set for right after sunset, to make sure all types of guests could safely attend, and the lawn had been lit up with blue and gold lights, creating safe paths in which to walk to the seating area and giving everything a twinkling, serene appearance.

Of course, the staff knew that graduation was rarely a serene event, and the fact that Ingvar's volcano was being unusually active emphasized the need to prepare the seniors as much as possible. Last year's cache of weapons had been discreetly stashed in a trunk behind the podium...and yes, they'd all been properly cleaned. Who knew what dried Viking blood could do to metal?

Once everything had been arranged, the guests were let in, and all that was left was to pray everything went smoothly.

The security guard raised one eyebrow. Did she really expect him to buy that?

Peter threw her one curious glance - wondering if she was yet another person he'd forgotten about - before returning his attention to... well, the fascinating sight of an empty stage.

Now Natalie did roll her eyes. "You're welcome to search me," she drawled, "but does it look like I'm hiding weapons in this dress?"

Okay so technically she might have been, since she'd gone for something looser and more bohemian than probably most girls here.

"I'm just a curious observer."

Petra had been watching the entire exchange, and she rolled her eyes at the bodyguard. "We are at a high school, and she's a teenage girl," she said, speaking up. "I'm not about to say that means she's harmless, but it does mean you're being impossibly stupid, oomay."

The bodyguard muttered something about serving the Hegemon.

"And you don't hear him arguing with me about this, do you?"

Which was really kind of a rare occurrance, considering how much Peter and Petra enjoyed arguing.

"Thank you," Natalie said, with the slightest incline of her head towards Petra. "I can understand the need for security but it's unnecessary against me."

She was going to leave it unsaid that she probably could have put up quite a fight against the bodyguards, anyway.

"Natalie Adams. Not a threat."

"Petra Delphiki," Petra provided. "Not a threat to you."

The difference was significant.

"So you know the school's version of this doll back," she surmised. While she didn't explain her slang, it was pretty obvious she was referring to Peter, and not particularly flatteringly.

"Can we at least maintain a level of professionalism in public?" Peter asked, chagrined.

Natalie didn't need the slang explained, no, and the exchange made some slight flicker of amusement pass her face. "We've spent some time together," she said, vaguely. Then she inclined her head to Peter. "Hello, Mr. Wiggin."

It would have seemed weird to just call him by his first name.

"Miss Adams," Peter said, with a polite inclination of his head that he'd gotten a lot of practice out of. "I know this has to be a little... odd."

"We're at a high school graduation. No one is going to be taking your picture," Petra contributed, rolling her eyes at him. "Professionalism isn't needed, no matter how much you love it."

Wiggins and their ridiculous need for distance messing with her life.

"Some things never change, eh?" Natalie noted with mild wryness. "And I go to school in Fandom. Trust me, I've dealt with odder things."

"I've heard a little about that," Petra said. "But only a little. Ender isn't a very elaborate correspondent."

'A very elaborate correspondent'? "So you're going to be polite to her?" Peter asked.

Then realized that he was still in public and this was no place to ~~UST~~ argue.

"Look, we didn't mean to bother you," he segued. Politeness was good.

... Wow, some things never did change, did they?

"So your politeness is still a work in progress," she noted because she couldn't help herself. Maybe she'd blame it on watching Peter and Petra's interaction, and the vague way it reminded her of... other people.

It wasn't something she'd bother dwelling on. "I'm not bothered. Nice to meet you both."
