Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2012, Early Saturday Evening (Part 1)

With things back to normal - or as normal as Fandom ever got - preparations for graduation had gone into full swing. The ceremony was set for right after sunset, to make sure all types of guests could safely attend, and the lawn had been lit up with blue and gold lights, creating safe paths in which to walk to the seating area and giving everything a twinkling, serene appearance.

Of course, the staff knew that graduation was rarely a serene event, and the fact that Ingvar's volcano was being unusually active emphasized the need to prepare the seniors as much as possible. Last year's cache of weapons had been discreetly stashed in a trunk behind the podium...and yes, they'd all been properly cleaned. Who knew what dried Viking blood could do to metal?

Once everything had been arranged, the guests were let in, and all that was left was to pray everything went smoothly.

Toby didn't know too many people who were graduating this year, but since one of those people was his best friend there was no way he was missing this. Having found a good spot, he settled in to watch the show, half his attention on the stage and half on the buzzing minds around him.

Kate slouched into a seat by Toby. There were at least a couple of people up on that stage she... liked tolerated well enough to want to watch this.

"What're the chances this'll be anything close to 'normal'?" she wondered.

Toby just raised an eyebrow. "We've been going to the same school for a year now, right?" In other words... no, he'd never experienced a Fandom graduation ceremony firsthand, but still. He didn't really need to ask that question.

"Right." Yeah, she got it. Stupid question. Kate half-consciously checked the presence of the leather bands around her wrists.

"We should've brought popcorn... Maybe a foam finger."

"I totally should've suggested a concession stand during student council meetings," Toby said with a disappointed sigh.

Kate sighed a show of disappointment. "I think you've officially failed us all with that oversight." She would probably still vote for him all the same, if she could.

"Looking forward to a summer free of responsibility?" Did student council crap go on over the summer? She wasn't entirely sure, but with half the group graduating it seemed a good bet.

"I'll definitely miss the free pizza," Toby admitted. And... okay, it had been interesting enough that he'd probably run again in the fall. Shut up.

"How will you feed yourself?" she joked idly.

Probably the same way the rest of them did, by collecting up whatever free food dropped from the sky or appeared in the common room cupboards.
