Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2012, Early Saturday Evening (Part 1)

With things back to normal - or as normal as Fandom ever got - preparations for graduation had gone into full swing. The ceremony was set for right after sunset, to make sure all types of guests could safely attend, and the lawn had been lit up with blue and gold lights, creating safe paths in which to walk to the seating area and giving everything a twinkling, serene appearance.

Of course, the staff knew that graduation was rarely a serene event, and the fact that Ingvar's volcano was being unusually active emphasized the need to prepare the seniors as much as possible. Last year's cache of weapons had been discreetly stashed in a trunk behind the podium...and yes, they'd all been properly cleaned. Who knew what dried Viking blood could do to metal?

Once everything had been arranged, the guests were let in, and all that was left was to pray everything went smoothly.

It wasn't that Mason didn't want to be here, supporting George, appreciating the... fresh air, or whatever. Nono, nothing like that. He was proud of George! And pleased that she'd be coming back home soon to pick up a little more slack with their appointments! But mostly proud!

And a little twitchy. It was generally best to not ask what was up with Mason when he got twitchy like that.

Lovely weather they were having here, wasn't it?

"You keep twitching like that, you're going to drive me nuts," Rube told him, with a fond smile. "There's an art to being a member of the audience. It's not as hard as being on stage, true, but it's just as important. In this world, there are those who are in the spotlight, and those who are not, and never the twain shall meet during the show. So keep still, and don't fuck this up for George."

He took a sip of coffee and watched the stage serenely.

"Right," Mason dutifully reported back. "Nuts, spotlight, no fucking."

He had clearly caught all the highlights of that speech, see?

"How long do these graduation ceremony things generally last? They're short, right? I seem to remember them being short." A beat. "Or else that was just the... no never mind. Not short."

It was probably for the best to never try to figure out where Mason was going with abandoned trains of thought, either.

"No, they're generally long and boring," Rube told him. "This is why I said you should have gone before we left." He looked around, and pointed in a direction with a shrug. "I think the bathrooms are that way. You've got five minutes. Go."

"Five. Five minutes. Right. I'll just..." Mason stood, pointing toward the bathrooms, and then taking off at a run.

Stumble.

Mostly a run.

He'd be back in ten. Possibly twenty. Because he was excellent at punctuality, thank you. It had been a long-cultivated skill that he prided himself on when he wasn't being all... Mason.

Rube sighed and shook his head. Sure, Mason got on his nerves sometimes -- all the time -- but there was some comfort in knowing that he'd never change. It put a different perspective on the rest of this fucked-up world.

After Mason got back from powdering his nose -- or whatever he was doing -- he was going to get a disapproving thwap upside the head. Until then, Rube just calmly watched the stage, and the crowd, and read the program.
