Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2012, Early Saturday Evening (Part 1)

With things back to normal - or as normal as Fandom ever got - preparations for graduation had gone into full swing. The ceremony was set for right after sunset, to make sure all types of guests could safely attend, and the lawn had been lit up with blue and gold lights, creating safe paths in which to walk to the seating area and giving everything a twinkling, serene appearance.

Of course, the staff knew that graduation was rarely a serene event, and the fact that Ingvar's volcano was being unusually active emphasized the need to prepare the seniors as much as possible. Last year's cache of weapons had been discreetly stashed in a trunk behind the podium...and yes, they'd all been properly cleaned. Who knew what dried Viking blood could do to metal?

Once everything had been arranged, the guests were let in, and all that was left was to pray everything went smoothly.

Karla tried not to wince at that. She knew well what it was like to only get to see one's mother for snatches at a time because of duty. But it wasn't like this was of Petra's doing, either.

"How old are they now?" she asked. "And...I'm sorry, how many?"

She wondered if Petra had heard of her last child, the one who had beaten Ender into a pulp a few months back.

"Two years, more or less," Petra replied. "And there's five. Five babies."

Five of her babies. Three gone with Bean. One missing.

"They've been living at this house near the Hegemon Compound." And off the look she'd almost seen Karla had, she added, "My parents have been looking after them. And... Peter."

"Peter?" Karla, don't sound so shocked. Your own son has seemed fairly well-adjusted with Peter as his father. "I'm glad your parents can be with them, those times you can't. It must be a comfort. And, Peter, too, I guess." Still with the not-so-certain about that. "Five? Life must be hectic!"

She offered Petra a smile, trying to show she meant no offense.

Petra just pulled a face. "Ia, I have no idea why Peter is there," she pointed out.

Well. Actually, she kind of did now, didn't she? But that was even more of a headache. "But I am glad the children were looked after. Though not as glad as I am to finally be back from the front to do it myself."

"Because Peter can't possibly fathom that things can happen without his direct supervision?" Karla suggested.

Because, you know, she'd met Peter.

"They like him," Petra said.

That was the really baffling part. Or at least the part she could talk about while Peter was sitting just a little while away.
