Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2012, Early Saturday Evening (Part 1)

With things back to normal - or as normal as Fandom ever got - preparations for graduation had gone into full swing. The ceremony was set for right after sunset, to make sure all types of guests could safely attend, and the lawn had been lit up with blue and gold lights, creating safe paths in which to walk to the seating area and giving everything a twinkling, serene appearance.

Of course, the staff knew that graduation was rarely a serene event, and the fact that Ingvar's volcano was being unusually active emphasized the need to prepare the seniors as much as possible. Last year's cache of weapons had been discreetly stashed in a trunk behind the podium...and yes, they'd all been properly cleaned. Who knew what dried Viking blood could do to metal?

Once everything had been arranged, the guests were let in, and all that was left was to pray everything went smoothly.

"You can tell the difference?" Valentine asked, lifting an inquisitive brow.

"It's an inflection thing," Topher assured her. "Or, like, this... kind of eye flash thing."

"Do you pay a lot of attention to my brother's eyes?" Valentine asked, because she had to.

"I wouldn't say a lot," Topher said, after seriously considering the question. "I mean, wait, we're still talking about Peter, right? 'Cause I don't wanna get in trouble with Ben here."

That was a joke. For the record.

Yeah, Ben didn't have anything to worry about it that were the case. Valentine grinned a little. "Yeah," she said, "still talking about Peter. How'd you get to know him, anyway? Did you guys have classes together, room together, anything like that?"

Topher shook his head. "Nah, we met sometime last year in a common room or something. I think he got people bagels." Because Peter was a generous guy. "We roomed together one day a few months ago when there was a crisis and my roommate was away, though!"

Getting people bagels and helping out in a crisis. If Valentine didn't know better and that Peter was actually really, really, really good at pretending to be a decent human being sometimes, she wouldn't have believed it. She shook her head.

"That was nice of him," she mused idly. "What kind of crisis?"

"People disappearing, worlds vanishing, that kind of thing," Topher explained loftily. "He did this freakishly good radio broadcast and made people blog about stuff."

So... Peter.

Valentine sighed a little. "Yeah," she said, casting her eyes toward the current Peter on the island, "that definitely sounds like Peter, alright. And Fandom, for that matter. I take it everything came back, though?"

"Yep. I mean, I think. As far as I know, anyway." Beat. "Also there was this awesome, like, puppy dragon."

Now it sounded like he was just bullshitting. But no!
