Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2012, Early Saturday Evening (Part 1)

With things back to normal - or as normal as Fandom ever got - preparations for graduation had gone into full swing. The ceremony was set for right after sunset, to make sure all types of guests could safely attend, and the lawn had been lit up with blue and gold lights, creating safe paths in which to walk to the seating area and giving everything a twinkling, serene appearance.

Of course, the staff knew that graduation was rarely a serene event, and the fact that Ingvar's volcano was being unusually active emphasized the need to prepare the seniors as much as possible. Last year's cache of weapons had been discreetly stashed in a trunk behind the podium...and yes, they'd all been properly cleaned. Who knew what dried Viking blood could do to metal?

Once everything had been arranged, the guests were let in, and all that was left was to pray everything went smoothly.

The only reason Cara didn't shake her head was that she was worried this stupid hat would fall off. "It's better than the uniforms. Barely." Mostly because it didn't seem to be made of polyester.

"And you only have to deal with it for a couple hours instead of a week," Bruce said. Silver linings!

"But Richard and Kahlan are seeing me in this," Cara said, trying and failing not to look in their direction. "They'll never let me forget it."

Kahlan still thought bringing up the Princess of Thrice's dress was the most hilarious thing ever.

"If this goes the way Fandom graduations tend to," Bruce started to say before giving a glance toward the active volcano, "they'll probably be more focused on other parts of the ceremony. You should be able to mostly skate by with the gown."

Oh, like a little thing like a volcano was going to distract them. "What do you mean?" Cara asked. "Should I have warned them about something?" She could probably justify leaving the procession if they were in danger, right?

"Sometimes the graduates have to fight something. That was the lead-up to the island traveling through space and time last summer," Bruce explained. "The audience is usually protected, though."

"I wasn't here last time," Cara said, carefully not looking at Bruce. "You sure they'll be safe?" Half actual concern, half grasping at straws.

"I've been in the audience for the last two. I walked away without being legitimately threatened either time," Bruce said.

"I'll bet you enjoyed not being able to join the fighting," Cara teased.

Bruce rolled his eyes a little at that. "The graduates had those situations under control."
