The weather was still lovely, of course. And there were all these neat tables of moddable snackies to help break those awkward silences that were so common with teenage get-togethers.

So... yeah.

Please. Effy's silences were never awkward... For her.

She also didn't really mingle in quite the same way as other people did. But she did eat, surprisingly enough. So she'd nabbed herself a plate and was sitting on the grass at the fringes of the gathering and picking at a mini quiche while she people-watched. New people were the best for that.

Blackagar was made of silence, awkward and non-awkward, thank you very much.

He took a seat just off to the side of the throngs of people that seemed to be massing on the lawn. It was all still a bit too noisy and crowded for his tastes.

Perhaps if he was feeling brave later, he'd try what they claimed was food!

Um, free food? Chuck was so there. He was a growing boy. That was his excuse and he'd be sticking to it.

Well, that and he was being sociable at the same time. New people! He was there for that too, and not trying to socialise from behind his GameBoy or anything.

Alex didn't really mind the sense of forced socialization when it came to new kids. They were all so wide eyed and unknowing. Alex didn't think he'd ever looked like that.

So, drink in hand, Alex found himself on the edges of the picnic so he could smoke and watch people without getting bitched at about the air pollution. He was a courteous guy.

The last time Bod had been at a welcome picnic, he'd been one of the new students. Now, he wasn't even if he still felt out of place at times. Still, he wasn't ever going to stop feeling that way if he shut himself in his room.

He'd grabbed himself some food and was idly snacking off of it as he wove his way through the throng of students.

Just because she was a graduate now, and couldn't help a newbie little sib of her very own this time, didn't mean Angela wouldn't be out here to meet them all just the same.

This was one of the more awesome parts of a semester, and she wasn't about to miss out on one of the last times she'd get to do it.

Yeah, Hannibal wasn't going to miss one of these even if attending was kind of bittersweet. Free food, sun and people? That's all he needed to be out there and social. Well, to be honest, he didn't even need that. Didn't take much to have him out and social.

After meeting his new roommate, Jonas stayed out to enjoy the rest of the picnic. The food was good, the weather was nice and after a few of these, it didn't make his nerves that ragged. In fact, he was actually enjoying himself.

Goose wasn't...mingling as such. Instead he was standing off a little bit from the crowd and observing what was going on and trying not to feel overwhelmed by his surroundings.

He was only somewhat succeeding.

The problem with being in a coma for months and then being shipped off to a tiny island before getting a chance to fully rehabilitate herself meant that Rosalind had rather quickly scoped out some food to nibble on, a glass of water, and a chair, in approximately that order.

She knew she'd have to get up and walk around shortly, if only to keep pushing her limit, but for the moment… Rosalind was going to sit, in her rather distinctive suit, and concentrate on not feeling as out of place as she surely appeared.

Also: sitting. Quite lovely this time of the year.

Hinata was rather on the edges of the crowd, instead of right in the middle, and perfectly content with that.

It was a lovely day. She had a new sibling. Surely the day could continue to go as well?

There was free food. Even if he hadn't had a little sibling to check in on, of course Kyle was going to be here. He'd learned in the last year that he didn't have to stash food in his pockets to keep for later. That was why he left the hot stuff and was only pocketing the cupcakes.

There was food here! Food that wasn't fish or smoked or salted or dried or fish! This was very exciting for a boy from Berk, where the food was tough and tasteless in equal amounts.

Real subtle-like, Hiccup sidled over to the food table and started sampling various things. Crispy things and salty things and sweet things, and he didn't know what any of them were, but it was hard to care when they were this good.

Just ignore that he was stuffing his pockets when he thought no one was watching.

Just yesterday, Ariel was devastated and refusing to have anything to do with a world outside of her grotto. And now? She was on land, with legs, surrounded by humans and human things and human food, and she even had on human clothes, thanks to the help of her Big Sibling Jono, who she was convinced had to be the nicest person in the entire world, on land or sea.

Plus, he was super cute, too.

But there was almost too much! Ariel was sure that three months was not going to be nearly enough time to absorb all these wonderful, wonderful things around her. She didn't know what excited her more, the people or the things. Her attention kept shuttling back and forth in open admiration and excitement, not even knowing where to begin and afraid she just might explode from it all.

Food meant that Jacob was there, stacking up a plate and looking around curiously for the new faces in the group. He still had a t-shirt on, but it was newbie day and who knew where that ended.

Ender had spotted his usual seat, and it was empty. Halfway between the crowd and the anti-social aisles, not close enough to the heart of the conversation to be drawn into it, but close enough not to come off as a loner.

And as always, armed with an apple to eat.

So there were a lot of people... over there, and there were a lot of no people over there. Like it was even a choice. Denise snagged a plate full of food - with an extra hamburger she was never going to eat, but who knew what it lured out - and sat down as far from the crowd as humanely possible.

Ick. Dealing with people.

And looked so very, very friendly and botherable as she stood by one of the food tables, frowning as she looked for dishes she recognised.

Claire's plate was full of just about every kind of junk food that was on the table.

Sometimes it was pretty nice to not have to worry about her diet giving her health problems.

She was nibbling and watching the crowd, looking for any newbies who might be interesting or any friends she hadn't talked to in a while.
