Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The weather was still lovely, of course. And there were all these neat tables of ~~moddable~~ snackies to help break those awkward silences that were so common with teenage get-togethers.

So... yeah.

Rosalind had no idea how he thought he could keep a promise like that.

"We'll see."

Neither had he, but he was trying to be reassuring here. "Yep," he nodded. "Wait until it starts hailing chocolate frogs or something and you're completely unphased by it."

Her look?

Was pretty well summed up in 'you're joking' at that.

Jacob barked a laugh. "Don't believe me now," he said, holding up his hands. "You'll figure it out later."

"I'll keep an eye out for it."

"Or an umbrella," he nodded. "And something to fight with. Unless you're one of the super power people."

She gave him a quizzical look. "Are super powers common here?"

Rosalind didn't have them.

Jake did. "Powers are common. I don't know if they're all super. There's magic users and aliens, a few Jedi. People here aren't always as ordinary as they look."

"Magic is common," she said dismissively. What? It was common in a world where anyone with a bit of materia and something to put it in could use it. Street urchins had it.

She wasn't touching the aliens comment.

"What are Jedi?"

"Where you're from maybe," he snorted. "They're um... people who can use the force. I couldn't explain, you should ask them to. They can do telekinetic stuff with it. It's pretty cool."

Telekinetic.

That sounded too much like ghosts and similar stories for her. Rosalind just shook her head. "And they give demonstrations?"

Surely they were fake.

He rolled his eyes. "If you ask nice enough, I suppose. I've fought with one during the invasion. It's impressive."

Real enough to fight with, then.

"What do you fight with?" she asked, changing the subject slightly.

He shrugged his shoulders and held up his hands. Which would be true if he was human-shaped when he fought. "Just these," he said easily. They were at least big enough, strong enough.

"Martial arts? Or just street fighting?"

"Nothing really," he said easily, stuffing his hands in his pockets. "I never said I'm good at fighting."

Oh. So he was nothing but muscle?

"Skill can take out strength." Pointedly.

Jake smirked and shrugged his shoulders. "Haven't lost yet."

The fight with Rose and Dimitri didn't count. There were two of them and the alley hadn't been the best fighting grounds. Shhhh.

She shook her head.

"You sound like someone I know." It was not, precisely, a compliment.

"Yeah? Are they as cute as me?" he teased.

She glanced at him, to all eyes absolutely disinterested and unimpressed.

"You're cute?"

He was, but she wasn't going to tell him that when he kept treading the line between 'amusing' and 'annoying'.

Jacob was good treading that line. Actually, he practically lived on that line. It was part of his charm. Or something.

He laughed and shrugged his shoulders easily, not looking hurt by the question. "You tell me."

"I really don't think so," she said primly. Almost a hint of a smile at the corners of her lips. "Fishing for compliments isn't appealing."

He laughed at her response. "I know. It's not my usual style, but you had me curious," he shook his head in amusement. "You're cruel."

Something flickered across her face at that.

"You're surprising," she said abruptly.
