Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The weather was still lovely, of course. And there were all these neat tables of moddable snackies to help break those awkward silences that were so common with teenage get-togethers.

So... yeah.

Enjoy!

He'd gotten it! The thrill of Ariel's successful hint encouraged her nodding, and then she lifted her fingers toward the top of her head, flicking them up in an imitation of the way Jono's fell over his head.

Not that she was paying particular attention to Jono's hair or anything like that, of course!

It was taking him a few seconds.

Wait for it.

Wait for it.

Waaaait for it.

"Jonothan Starsmore," Edmund said slowly. He knew the face, but the name was slow coming. "He wears the scarf around his face? He doesn't really talk." Rather like Ariel, really. He tried looking around to see if Jono was within sight.

Yes! That was it! As Edmund hit the nail on the head, Ariel's head nodded in confirmation, and she was just about to sigh and smile in appreciation of how smart Edmund was when he went on with the rest of it and that part about Jono not really talking. That caused her to pause and frown in confusion like Edmund didn't know what he as talking about, because Jono had talked a lot.

Of course it sound different than when Edmund talked, but Ariel just chalked that up to maybe the scarf having an effect on things and how sound just seemed to travel differently through air than it did through the water she was used to.

"He seems like a sensible man," Edmund went on, drawing from what he knew of Jono from the class they'd had together. "You're in good hands. I'm sure he'll look out for you should you need anything. Is your home anything like Fandom?"

Now that, being in good hands, Ariel could easily agree with, and she gave a little nod before she laughed at Edmund's next question. Well, it was definitely a laugh, though it had no sound. She shook her head, sweeping her her hands in front of her to express that her home was absolutely nothing like this, and that, in her opinion, was a very good thing.

"You'll manage," he reassured her. "It's not a good deal like my home either and you will probably find that it's as alien to you as it is to the person who lives next door. If you keep an open mind, you might even come to like it here."

Oh, but Ariel already love it here, wide eyed and shaking her head as she looked around and gave a satisfied, happy sounding sigh. Three months. Oh, it would be plenty of time to find a kiss and then she could stay here forever...

If she got that kiss. The reminder caused Ariel to turn her most becoming smile on Edmund, her blue eyes wide and inviting, and she shook her head slowly in disbelief that anything could be as different to someone as this place was to her home.

Edmund took the bright smile to mean she liked it already rather than anything he might normally be oblivious to. "Then you're off to a good start. If you're in need of anything, I'm in Room 429 in the dorms building where we all sleep." He pointed it out.

Ariel followed Edmund's finger and her hands went together, clapping in excitement to discover that the beautiful building would actually be where she'd be staying. Why, she'd feel practically at home, despite being on land. The excitement was reaching a level where she could only bounce, just a little, in an effort to contain it all.

But 429. She'd definitely have to remember that and tried to commit to memory, just like Jono's room number. And as she was starting to figure out how the whole thing worked, she lifted her hands to put her fingers into the right motions to signal to him where she might be found. Five. One. Seven!

"517," he repeated. "That's where your room is?" He made a note to check the new room assignment list to be sure. She seemed like the type of person who could do with someone checking in to make sure she hadn't been devoured by the Loch Ness Monster should he or she decide to make an appearance.

Ariel nodded once, definiitely, and smiled at Edmund. Smiling was, for a moment, all she could think to do, because she'd hit that inevitable roadblock that came with not being able to talk. Conversation was difficult when you wanted to be able to ask someone questions about themselves, to get to know them better, but couldn't. A moment of worry passed over Ariel's face but then she tried, as best she could, to just ask all those questions in her expression, leaning forward with a sort of eager intent to listen to whatever Edmund might want to tell her about himself. She tried to fill her eyes with all the questions she couldn't ask: What did he like to do for fun? Did he work somewhere, like Jono did? What did he think of redheads? Did he know of any good places to take someone if you wanted to, you know, kiss them?

Typical get to know you sort of things, really.

Unfortunately, Edmund was drawing a blank. But perhaps, he reasoned, there would be other things to talk about if Ariel decided to talk or they found other ways to communicate. He would think on it. Probably a lot. There wasn't a lot to do around here, okay?

"I'm sure you have plenty more people to meet, so I'll leave you to do that. But should you need anything..." He trailed off.

Oooh, rejected! Ariel sagged a little in disappointment, but she understood, really. It couldn't be easy basically holding a conversation with a mute wall that probably smelled like fish. Maybe she'd see him around, though, and that trailed off offer...she was going to just pick right up on that one, brightening again, nodding enthusiastically.

Oh, she would. If she needed anything, she would, he could bet on it.

"Good luck with the rest of your first day," Edmund said reassuringly, then gave another smaller bow and excused himself. As he went to check the food table, he couldn't help but think that Ariel reminded him a good deal of Giselle.

Ariel beamed, nodding her head and executing a quick curtsy of gratitude in response to his smaller bow, and, unable to help it, she waved her hand excitedly after Edmund as he drifted off to the food table.

She gave a satisfied little sigh, dropping her hand and thinking that that went very well. Encouraged by such a successful encounter, she started to cast her blue eyes around the crowd once again, wondering who there was to meet next.
