Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The weather was still lovely, of course. And there were all these neat tables of moddable snackies to help break those awkward silences that were so common with teenage get-togethers.

So... yeah.

Enjoy!

Claire was enjoying her reaction to all the new foods.

"Maybe we should try some veggies," she suggested. "They're crunchy too and have vitamins and stuff."

She pointed out a tray that had celery, carrots, several colors of peppers, broccoli and mushrooms.

Spotting the broccoli, Ariel almost laughed. Those didn't look like food, either. They looked like...like...well, Ariel didn't know the name of it, but she knew that they were a land thing, she'd seen them in pictures and a few books, and she picked up a piece, lifted her hand with her palm facing upwards and planted the piece of broccoli on it, just like one of those things that it reminded her of.

Actually, there was one right there. Ariel pointed at the nearest tree and then pointed to the broccoli. Mini-tree!

Claire laughed. "Yeah, they do kind of look like trees," she said. "That's broccoli. It's not bad. Not my favorite, but it tastes really good if you cook it with cheese."

Cheese seemed to be a theme so far. With that less than raving review, Ariel bit into the little broccoli tree (tree! Those things were called trees!), and her expression was clear that, yeah, it wasn't likely to be among her favorites, either. She quirked her head at Claire, which what was her favorite.

"The red peppers are pretty good," Claire said. "And they all taste better if you dip them in the white stuff."

It was a good thing that Claire went with that one, because it had a color to go along with it to help Ariel know exactly which ones were red peppers. And white stuff was pretty self-explanatory, too.

Not to mention delicious. Clearly, Ariel was a fan of that one, melting over the tastiness. This, she thought, pointing to the white stuff with an appreciative look. Yum!

Yeah, it was so going to be Claire's fault when Ariel put on twenty pounds.

"The white stuff is ranch dressing. Much like cheese, it will make things taste better."

There was that word again, cheeeeese. Ariel held up a finger, not sure if Claire could catch which word she meant to pin down, but she gave a look over the table, slightly exaggerated, to help try to tell her that she wanted to find more of this cheese stuff.

Twenty pounds was definitely guessing on the short end of things.

Claire watched her and tried to interpret what she was looking for. "Are you looking for more cheese?" she guessed.

Yes! Ariel clapped her hands and listed them in a little cheer for another successful interpretation. She'd heard cheese mentioned so much that she wanted to see more of that!

Hooray for cheese!

Claire grinned. "Okay. Let's see."

She walked to a different part of the food table. "There's some cheese cubes and crackers there," she said, pointing them out. "Or there's some cheese and bread that you can make into sandwiches."

Ariel easily gravitated toward the cheese cubes; she liked the shape of them and they were easy to pop into her mouth, which was one of the fun things about eating in this picking sort of way. So in one went, a nice pretty yellow one.

Oh my gosh.

Cheese was awesome!

Cheese was awesome. Claire would definitely agree.

"You might wanna take a break from eating," she warned. "Too much new stuff too fast could make you sick."

[identity profile] shes-got-legs.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
But...there was so much more to try! Ariel shot Claire a slightly sulking look, popped at least one more cube of cheese into her mouth, and then sighed in acquiescence. It would probably be a good idea to listen to the human regarding things like human stomachs.

"There will be plenty of other chances for you try new stuff," Claire promised. "The common rooms in the dorm are a great place to hang out because people will go there to cook and bake. And there's a cafeteria that serves lunch every day."

Now where did she put that--ah! There it was! Ariel relocated the notebook and just may have sneaked another cube of cheese on her way to grabbing it.

Good food? she wrote, tilting her head hopefully.

"Yeah, it is," Claire told her. "What floor are you on in the dorm?"

Sure, Ariel had the notebook, but this one she could answer without it, so she did. She needed to get used to the nonverbal thing as much as she could, after all.

She held out a hand, all five fingers splayed. Floor five! She pushed the five forward and followed it with a one and a seven. Five one seven!

"I don't know if people cook in that common room a lot, but I'm in 312 and there's almost always someone cooking on my floor," Claire told her. "So if you're ever looking for something to eat, it might be a good place to start."
