The weather was still lovely, of course. And there were all these neat tables of moddable snackies to help break those awkward silences that were so common with teenage get-togethers.

Uhura shook the other girl's hand. "Uhura. Hamburgers are kind of odd. By the way- how do you do that?" She gestured at the floating plate with her broccoli. "Personal levitation device?"

Fortunately, after her last little sibling, Karla no longer had to ask 'Personal whatsit device?'

Whether she could convince Uhura that it was magic and not some fancy kind of science, well, that would remain to be seen.

"Craft," she replied with a shake of her head. "Ummm, magic. My world doesn't do technology, we have Craft instead."

Because Craft was better.

"No technology?" Uhura looked slightly horrified. "How do you go places? Find information? Comm people?"

Magic was something she read about as a kid. It wasn't real. Was it? She supposed it could be, seeing as a sentient felt frog was running around here somewhere. Anything was possible.

"Craft, Craft, and more Craft," Karla said, grinning. "We ride horses or in Coaches that speed along on threads called the 'Winds.' And we make extensive use of psychic threads, which can reach beyond Territories to communicate. As for information..." Karla shrugged and laughed a bit. "We have books and the Keep, but I can't argue that the internet is awfully useful."

Uhura took a deep breath. Her father said to take a deep breath whenever she needed to calm down. Or just needed a moment. Her parents gave her so much advice before she left, and almost none of it was coming in handy today.

"Uh, craft... how does it work?"

Karla laughed a bit at that. "That's a really involved answer and probably not the best conversation to have at the newbie picnic. But I promise to sit down and explain it to you some time in the future. Once you've adjusted to being in this world, I'll be happy to talk to you about how my world works."

She didn't want Uhura to think she was blowing her off, but she also didn't want to confuse her any further. It didn't seem to matter where or when someone was from; Fandom always had a way of pulling out the rug from everyone's feet.
