The weather was still lovely, of course. And there were all these neat tables of moddable snackies to help break those awkward silences that were so common with teenage get-togethers.

The best way to describe Cara's expression was 'intrigued', and possibly 'vaguely aroused'. "Really?"

"Really." Why would he lie about that? "And then there's a blinding light that hurts even if you squeeze your eyes shut. Gets in your brain, which is busy with all the other stuff, and makes it impossible to ignore any of it."

"It was different when Richard and I ended up in the future. Lots of light but no pain." Ignore the fact her tone was almost wistful at that, Kyle, Cara was just a bit messed up that way.

Kyle was used to messed up people. He lived with one. "Time travel's different wherever you go. The tech used to send me back here is machine-made. They don't think about pain."
