Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The weather was still lovely, of course. And there were all these neat tables of ~~moddable~~ snackies to help break those awkward silences that were so common with teenage get-togethers.

"I'll believe in Batman when I see him," Tim said.

"Fair enough," Jaime shrugged again. "For all I know he really doesn't exist where you're from."

"In Gotham? That's what I just said," Tim said.

"Your Gotham," Jaime corrected. The distinction was an important one.

It took him a moment. "Right, multiverse." Tim ran a hand through his hair. "It's going to take a bit to get used to that."

"Don't worry," Jaime laughed. "You'll have much more headache-inducing stuff to deal with before long. Multi-verse'll be old hat."

"Oh, well, that's a comforting thought," Tim said.

"Isn't it just?" Jaime asked.

Then he shrugged and shook his head. "Hey, it's not all that bad, really. I mean, maybe your Gotham doesn't have Batman, but if it's even half as weird as mine, you'll probably manage just fine."

"This place seems okay so far," Tim said. "Cool people, at least."

"Now that's certainly true." Jaime paused before lifting an eyebrow outrageously. "I mean, I'm here, after all."

"That too," Tim said. "And at least I'm not rooming with a girl."

"Hey, nothing wrong with rooming with girls," Jaime countered, almost offended for Didi's sake. Except she could be offended for her own sake. And she wouldn't be anyway, so...

"I just think it'd be awkward," Tim said.

"At first, maybe." Jaime shrugged, then grinned. "And I guess not everyone can get as an awesome a roommate as I did." Like, if he'd had Emma Frost as his roommate, that would have been pretty dang awkward.

"Who's your roommate?" Tim asked.

"Was," Jaime corrected a bit sadly. "She graduated."

"Aw!" Tim said. "Sounds like you'll miss her."

"Well, yeah. Like I said: she was super-awesome." Jaime smiled at a sudden memory, then chortled under his breath.

"And apparently hilarious," Tim said, raising his eyebrows.

"Well, yeah. Those two do tend to go hand in hand." Jaime snorted again, then sighed. "Man..."

He shook his head and looked at Tim. "Who did you end up with, anyway? Another newbie?"

Tim nodded. "Another Gotham kid. Jason Todd." So weird to say his name like that, like he was just another kid.

"Same Gotham as you?" Jaime asked curiously. Because that sort of thing was pretty rare as far as Jaime knew.

"I don't know yet," Tim said. "How do you figure that out?"

"Um... good question. Year. Major events. Important people. Ask enough questions and I guess you'll either find something that's different or you won't."

Tim nodded. "I'll have to ask him." Comparing notes with Jason could get tricky, but he needed to know.
