The weather was still lovely, of course. And there were all these neat tables of moddable snackies to help break those awkward silences that were so common with teenage get-togethers.

"Awesome," he replied happily. "Not that I think I really suffered from having new-kid-ness all over me, but at least now I know more than someone here. Like that kid," he said, pointing out a particularly small and scrawny new kid. "I already know about chocolate rain and monkeyponies and random kids and he doesn't, so I win."

What a weird way to look at things.

Weird. Kate raised a brow at that. "You're seeing this in a very interesting way, you know that?"

She shook her head, amused. "But you were a total new kid. I remember getting a new kid stare from you."

"That's 'cause you're a pretty girl," Puck pointed out. "All the pretty girls got my new kid stare. I left the ugly ones and the guys alone."

There were no ugly girls in Fandom, though, so Puck had pretty much just harassed most of the girls, period.

Although Kate was pretty sure she'd gotten one of those, too.

"It was more like '...what was that about the man-eating vegetables?'"

"Yeah, well, I'm from freakin' Ohio," Puck said a touch defensively. "The most exciting thing that happens there is when we actually win a game."

"Don't get touchy with me, Ohio boy," Kate snorted. "I'm from Kansas. Think anything interesting ever happens there?" Y'know, outside the Gregson household. "I think I was far more new kid stare-y than you were, actually."

"Oh man, how many Dorothy jokes did you hear?" he asked, eyes widening. "'Cause I just figured I'd point out that you're not in Kansas anymore but you've probably heard that a billion times."

"Actually, I haven't gotten that many of those," Kate said after a short pause for thought. "Kinda weird, actually.Although, it was probably partly because we only stopped metaing Oz stuff about a month after I got here."

She shrugged. "But, not a whole lot of people here even know where Kansas is."

"I think someone literally asked me what an Ohio was when I got here," Puck agreed, nodding. "I think people like you and me might have it the weirdest. We're just simple midwesterners."

Kate looked mock-insulted for a second. "You can be simple for both of us. There's nothing simple about me." Understatement. "You're right, though. I mean, there's none of this weird shit happening where you're from, right?"

"Exactly," he said, cocking a finger at him. "Just, you know, fucking Ohio being boring. No mutants or wizards or chocolate rain."
