Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2011, Saturday Early Evening - Part One!

The ceremony was once again held at sunset for the benefit of the graduates’ less diurnal guests, but the lawn was well-lit with twinkling blue and gold lights draped across bleachers, stage, surrounding trees and specially-assembled trellises, giving the overall effect of a peaceful fairy grove. (Not, say, Las Vegas. Tasteful twinkling lights.)

The staff having taken note of every previous graduation including the most recent, the lights had been purchased from Acme Decorations Studio with a money-back No Coming To Life And Terrorizing Your Party Guests Guarantee... and there was a rather large cache of weapons stashed in a trunk behind the podium. The chance that it would rain toys that could later be used for self-defense was slightly less than the chance that there would be a need for self-defense.

No one could say Fandom High wasn’t a learning experience.

Dolf wasn't usually a big fan of Queen's Day, beyond the mandatory prowling-the-Queen's-Day-flea-markets that every boy his age had to go through. But having been stuck here for a ong time now, it felt more important, somehow.

Which would explain the hat (http://www.damfeestartikelen.nl/images/oranje-hoed-rood-wit-blauw-61538.jpg) he had strapped to his back when he sat down in the audience that evening.

Susie still felt a kind of disbelief that she was watching this happen, that Calvin had actually managed to graduate high school, even one as odd as this seemed to be.

She occasionally cast a glance beside her. That Calvin had insisted on Hobbes getting his own seat...that she could believe.

There was no chance that Faramir would miss this occasion. He'd changed his usual ranger drab for a rather more fanciful outfit, bearing the White Tree on his chest.

He found himself a seat upfront so he would not have to miss a moment of the ceremony.

Ender was there, of course, entering the audience early so he'd have a decent seat. He wasn't particularly plagued by big emotions about the whole ceremony, unlike, he suspected, most of the crowd.

Arthur... had arrived here half out of an inborn respect for ceremony and pride in whatever pursuit he had spent some year and a half of his life on, and half out of him Merlin bumbling into some portal or another, which was starting to become almost an expected part of post-Fandom life.

But he was here. He might even deign to clap for certain graduates.

Sure, Mitchell might have been more than a little absentee-ish these past few months, and he might find this whole ceremony a bit... well, ridiculous, but it was Kate's graduation.

So of course he showed, sitting down near the edges.

When it all came down to it, Constance was really quite proud of her Potential; if you knew how to decipher Repressed Watcher Facial Expressions, you might be able to read that in her smile.

A hint of distraction, as well, as if something big and worrisome was going on back home, but on that note... she wouldn't be bringing that up to anyone.

She was a member of the Watchers' Council, after all. Keeping secrets was a thing they did.

Sarah didn't belong here, but it was a good day for not belonging. She arrived as the ceremony was getting underway, not too early to have to sit around but not so late as to draw attention to herself. She didn't belong here, she reminded herself. She belonged with John. Being so far away from him unsettled Sarah, but when the invitation to come here was sent from someone who had never steered her wrong, she knew that it was right to come. A few hours, that's all this was, and then home.

Sarah was hyper-aware of her surroundings. She couldn't do otherwise any more. Kyle Reese had come running into her life one night and everything changed. Her approach, stepping into Kyle's life for the first time, was more subtle. There was no running. There were no shots being fired or threats against her life. Well, no more than usual. She was satisfied with sitting and watching for him.

Would she even recognize him as a boy?

Jake wasn't going to miss this, it was a chance to be loud and no one could blame him for it. Also, he was hoping there'd be free food.

Leto had been to Fandom graduations before - including his own - even if had been a while ago. Or last year, if you counted Fandom time. Anyway, he had found a seat, and was rather excited to see what would happen this time.

Yeah, of course Bobby was here, a piece of rolled-up posterboard tucked underneath one arm as he searched for a seat. He was torn between beaming proudly about his friends graduating... and frowning mopily about his friends graduating.

Jason had found a seat in the middle of the crush of guests and was glancing around the sea of people--not expecting to spot familiar faces or anything, just admiring the scenery.

This place didn't have a lot of ugly people. He approved.

It had been just about a year since Zayne graduated from Fandom only to see his life go insane almost immediately afterward. So, really, visiting today was partially for him to get a little more closure on that. But mostly he was here for the graduates....

... and as backup just in case the audience needed it while whatever weirdness was going to happen to the graduates happened, yes.

After Leia's warnings last night, Luke was glancing nervously around the crowd as he found a seat, half-expecting to be recognized by everyone now.

Bruce found a good spot in the audience and watched. He was confident that if anything happened, the graduates would be able to handle things, so he was primarily watching as a true spectator as a change of pace.

Quinn noted the decorations with approval, though she wondered if maybe next year she could get a slightly more flattering shade of gold for the gowns. She sat high in the crowd, in a generally cheerful mood. A girl didn't turn 17 every day, and graduation meant she could probably glom onto somebody else's party.

While Claudine had not told Sookie she was coming, she hadn't wanted to miss this. She'd only spent limited time among humans, of course, but even she knew that graduations were an impressive accomplishment for a human.

So she found herself a place to sit, dressed in a simple sundress and smiling as she kept an eye out for her cousin.

Rilla wouldn't dream of missing the ceremony. She had put on her nicest hat (hush, Karla, it was nice) and had found a seat with a pretty good view of the stage.

Yes, I realize there are 15 letters in it. I swear they snuck some extra umlauts in there, though.
