Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2011, Saturday Early Evening - Part One!

The ceremony was once again held at sunset for the benefit of the graduates’ less diurnal guests, but the lawn was well-lit with twinkling blue and gold lights draped across bleachers, stage, surrounding trees and specially-assembled trellises, giving the overall effect of a peaceful fairy grove. (Not, say, Las Vegas. Tasteful twinkling lights.)

The staff having taken note of every previous graduation including the most recent, the lights had been purchased from Acme Decorations Studio with a money-back No Coming To Life And Terrorizing Your Party Guests Guarantee... and there was a rather large cache of weapons stashed in a trunk behind the podium. The chance that it would rain toys that could later be used for self-defense was slightly less than the chance that there would be a need for self-defense.

No one could say Fandom High wasn’t a learning experience.

With something approaching a cackle, Karla darted out into the aisle briefly, just long enough to grab Roy's face and bring it down to hers for a quick kiss. Hey, he'd said she could! And when else would she get the chance?

"Congratulations!" she said, beaming. "No, I'm still not running away with you."

Roy was surprised for a moment, then he grinned and protested, "But we would have so much fun!"

"Nope, sorry!" Karla said, laughing. "But the baby was going to have wings. And I know how you feel about that."

"Actually I totally wouldn't care if the baby had wings," Roy admitted. He was ridiculously easy-going about that sort of thing. "I was just being silly."

Karla gave him a cheerful eyeroll. "I didn't really think you would," she assured him. "Still not running away though."

Mostly because she was stupidly in love with the winged-baby's father, even if said winged baby didn't exist.

"But I had to take you up on that offer before it expired." And when Roy would least expect it. And when it could be caught on film.

Pfft, like that offer would have expired. "Well, it definitely made my graduation more memorable!"

Going by Sookie's expression, he wasn't the only one.

"I do what I can," Karla said, still grinning. "I'll miss you, Roy. This was totally worth all the trouble I'm about to get into."

"I'll defend your honor," Roy promised. "And I'll be around for the summer, at least." He didn't have anywhere to go yet, after all.

"My hero," Karla said, laughing again. "Don't be surprised if I don't drag you over to help me explain or something. But I am glad to know you'll be around for the summer."

The island was going to be a much less pretty place when he left. That wasn't the only reason, but it was a reason.

"Karla!" Sookie all but shrieked, indignant. "What are you doing?"

Karla, already chuckling, couldn't help but laugh harder at Sookie's face. And tone. "Nonono, it's okay," she promised. "I--we--it's a running joke. From the kissing booths. And this is the last time it would be--" okay, appropriate was clearly not the right word "--allowable. Besides, I already broke the tragic news we're not running away together."

"Allowable?" Sookie repeated, still staring. "I...congrats, you have made my graduation all the more memorable, honeybunch."

"Better me than something awful?" Karla tried. "As opposed to last year, with the singing and the animals and stuff?"

Clearly, Karla hadn't had any premonitions about the space-Vikings.

And just as clearly, a change of topic was due. "Look at my skirt, Sookie! I'm wearing it for you!"

"And you look lovely in it," Sookie added sincerely. "I'll be watching your hemlines all summer, babe. You just set the standard."

"Whaaaaaaaat?" Karla wailed, suddenly looking panicked. "No, no! This is my graduation skirt! As soon as this is over, I'm running back and changing into something that hits my toes."

Except for how she was getting the sinking feeling no one would let her.

"Nope," Sookie said. "I'll guilt you if I have to. This is our last summer before I go away to college! And Emma too! You have to, Karla. Have to."

Dinah was laughing very, very hard, but she still got a photo of the kiss, and then wolf-whistled her appreciation. "CONGRATS, ROY!"

Roy facepalmed for a moment, then waved sheepishly at Dinah.

Dinah gave him a thumbs' up and chortled, looking forward to giving him way more crap about this after the ceremony.

Karla cackled at Dinah and fist-bumped the air. Now Roy would know better than to give her the equivalent of a dare. She would come back for it with a vengeance, many months after he'd probably forgotten he'd ever said anything, while people caught it on film.

Dinah offered her hand in a high-five and lowered her voice to say, "Perfect. Roy needs to be knocked off balance and congratulated as much as possible."

More hugs! Always!

"I'm always up for both those things," Karla whispered back, not smugly at all or anything, really. "Did you get his face when I pulled away?"

"Duh." Dinah showed her the photo on her camera, with Roy's gob-smacked expression, and grinned. "I am so finding the Other Dinah's e-mail and sending this to her."

Karla laughed some more, honestly feeling a million times better than she had when she'd arrived. "Good. I'm glad she'll know that Roy's got people keeping him on his toes while he's here."

It's what any big sister would want!

"Exactly," Dinah said in satisfaction. "Also? Niiiice skirt."

And a good five inches above the knees, at least!
