Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2011, Saturday Early Evening - Part One!

The ceremony was once again held at sunset for the benefit of the graduates’ less diurnal guests, but the lawn was well-lit with twinkling blue and gold lights draped across bleachers, stage, surrounding trees and specially-assembled trellises, giving the overall effect of a peaceful fairy grove. (Not, say, Las Vegas. Tasteful twinkling lights.)

The staff having taken note of every previous graduation including the most recent, the lights had been purchased from Acme Decorations Studio with a money-back No Coming To Life And Terrorizing Your Party Guests Guarantee... and there was a rather large cache of weapons stashed in a trunk behind the podium. The chance that it would rain toys that could later be used for self-defense was slightly less than the chance that there would be a need for self-defense.

No one could say Fandom High wasn’t a learning experience.

Francine was a little off-kilter given how strange everything had gone the last time they visited the island, but she was determined to write that over with better memories, so she was smiling as she found a set of empty seats and waved for Katchoo.

"Popcorn, popcorn, getcher popcorn here," Katchoo sang mockingly; she had none, actually, as she dropped into her seat. "That's a lost revenue opportunity for Student Council, innit?"

"I have drinks, at least?" They were cold bottles of Coke from T&C that she slipped out of her bag, but they did qualify as drinks.

Well, cold and caffeinated. That was the important part.

"I guess it'll have to do," Katchoo conceded, but she had to peer at the bag. "Geez, Francie, what have you got in there?"

"Just pop and some chips," Francine protested. It wasn't like she'd bought out the store. "And some Twinkies, and mints, and gum, and beef jerky and one of those sour candy spray things 'cause it looked fun."

Shut up.

"All that, and no popcorn." Katchoo made a sad tsking noise. "You'd have had room for the microwave too, if you'd left out the gum."

Francine frowned. "That'd be the world's smallest microwave."

"Only on the outside," Katchoo maintained. "It's Fandom. Work with me here!"

Francine snorted. "Okay, Next time I'm in Turtle & Canary, I'll check to see if they have any bigger-on-the-inside microwaves."

Pounce!

Look, last time Dinah saw her, Francine was old and miserable and not with Katchoo. Pounce-hugging was required.

And Francine didn't have a drink in her hand,unlike the last time there was a tacklehug opportunity today, so she was all for that. "Hiiii!"

"Hiiii!" With a big squeeze and a grin. "I'm so glad you're here! As you. And not unhappy older you. And can you believe we had to go through this last year?"

That answered the question about whether Dinah remembered that conversation. Not that Francine had been about to ask that question.

"That's what I was just saying to Arthur. Let's hope this graduation leans more towards the stuffed animals and less towards the naked, right?"

Ohhh yes. And the PTSD she'd been sporting. As well as stuff to tell Francine later where squirrels couldn't overhear. Or Kyle, for that matter.

"Oh God, how did I block out the naked?" she asked aloud. "...probably because helping Morgana kill a chimera was more fun."

"Some of us had clothes when we stopped being animals, and some of us didn't," Francine said, not pouting at all, RLY.

"Because the Island hates us. Or wants us to always be embarrassed," Dinah said. Also not pouting. "But not this year! We aren't graduating, yay. Just... half our friends are."

Francine glanced over at the stage. "I kind of hate thinking of the time when there won't be anybody left at the school who we know."

"Yeeeah," Dinah admitted. "It's still two more years 'til Karla graduates, but after that... But then, the year after that, we all graduate college. Theoretically, anyway."

"Right, if they don't kick us all out when they realize how weird Fandom made us."

No, Francie. Just you.

"Or we don't get arrested." Maybe not just her?
