Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2011, Saturday Early Evening - Part One!

The ceremony was once again held at sunset for the benefit of the graduates’ less diurnal guests, but the lawn was well-lit with twinkling blue and gold lights draped across bleachers, stage, surrounding trees and specially-assembled trellises, giving the overall effect of a peaceful fairy grove. (Not, say, Las Vegas. Tasteful twinkling lights.)

The staff having taken note of every previous graduation including the most recent, the lights had been purchased from Acme Decorations Studio with a money-back No Coming To Life And Terrorizing Your Party Guests Guarantee... and there was a rather large cache of weapons stashed in a trunk behind the podium. The chance that it would rain toys that could later be used for self-defense was slightly less than the chance that there would be a need for self-defense.

No one could say Fandom High wasn’t a learning experience.

Sure, Mitchell might have been more than a little absentee-ish these past few months, and he might find this whole ceremony a bit... well, ridiculous, but it was Kate's graduation.

So of course he showed, sitting down near the edges.

"Um, hello again Mr. Mitchell," Marshall said, taking a seat nearby with his flowers. "Good to see you made it."

Which was code for 'Kate wasn't sure you'd show up', but he thought that might be rude.

"Well, I wasn't going to miss it," Mitchell replied.

He'd even turned off his mobile an hour ago just to escape any sudden 'emergency' calls.

"Hey, Moosh."

Marshall almost made a face at that name, then just gave a quiet snort. It really looked like Kate had made it stick for everyone except Bod, no use fighting it. "Hi," he said. "You probably didn't need to use all your math skills just to figure out when to show up, at least?"

"Time still moving a bit oddly for you lot?" Mitchell guessed. "I bet Kate's been clawing at the walls about it."

"She's not happy about it," Marshall confirmed with a nod. "But, I think she's a little more focused on graduating, right now. Plus I think she's glad she doesn't have to deal with our parents and what they hope for her future yet."

"University thing?" he guessed.

Marshall nodded. "I don't think my parents have really realized yet she's not intending to go."

"I still think she should," Mitchell muttered, glancing towards the graduates. "I wouldn't put it past her to get on a plane as soon as this is done and run off somewhere else in the world."

"Well, she has at least... a month, in this place's time, before they'll even start asking about graduation," Marshall shrugged. He honestly hadn't expected Kate to be too into pursuing an academic future. "Could you honestly see her going to college?"

"I couldn't see half the people at university going to university," Mitchell replied. "Doesn't mean they shouldn't. It's a future."

"Well, good luck convincing her of that," Marshall replied, wryly. "Because she seems pretty determined to me."

"Kate's always determined about everything," Mitchell said, shrugging. He poked around his pocket for his packet of cigarettes. "Give it time."

Jack nodded a greeting. "It's a good day for a graduation," he decided. "Even if it does not feel like a year since I did this."

"Too long ago, or too short?" Mitchell asked, glancing over his chair at him. "Jack! Good to see you, mate."

"Much shorter," Jack decided. "It might feel that long if I could spend three weeks away, but that doesn't seem to be my lot just yet."

This was not actually a real complaint.

"And good to see you. How have you been?"

"Fairly busy," Mitchell said, because he hadn't quite grokked yet that that was technically a big red flag coming from him. "I haven't been spending as much time here, myself. But what'll you do about your lot, yeah?"

"Ride it as long as it lasts, I suppose," Jack said. "I'm just hoping this weekend I stay the right age and no one gets kidnapped. What's keeping you busy?"

Red flag: spotted, though Jack was only slightly wary. You could only take so many crises in a week before your heart gave out.

[OOC: I have such love for the word 'grokked', BTW.]

"Oh, you know, stuff," Mitchell said. Beat. Grin. "Dating... stuff."

"Yeah?" Blink. Blink. Well, if Mitchell looked happy ... "Curly-haired whatsit?"

"Lucy," Mitchell said, giving Jack just a... mild look. "She knows me. Well. You know what she knows."

"Lucy," Jack repeated. He'd only heard her name a few times. "You told her? And she's all right with it?"

'Curly-haired whatsit' went up a few notches in his estimation.

"Yeah." Mitchell's lips pulled up further. "She's really all right with it." Beat. "I mean, not like one of those desperate Goths, or anything, but just-- cool."

"Only bad things come from consorting with desperate goths," Jack said, quirking a bit of a smile because he was not, in truth, inclined to lump himself into that group anyhow. "That's fantastic. Good luck with it."

"Thank you," Mitchell said, honestly. Then he shrugged. "So what about you, then? Any fascinating news, besides your stellar Fandom Island attendance record?"
