Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2011, Saturday Early Evening - Part One!

The ceremony was once again held at sunset for the benefit of the graduates’ less diurnal guests, but the lawn was well-lit with twinkling blue and gold lights draped across bleachers, stage, surrounding trees and specially-assembled trellises, giving the overall effect of a peaceful fairy grove. (Not, say, Las Vegas. Tasteful twinkling lights.)

The staff having taken note of every previous graduation including the most recent, the lights had been purchased from Acme Decorations Studio with a money-back No Coming To Life And Terrorizing Your Party Guests Guarantee... and there was a rather large cache of weapons stashed in a trunk behind the podium. The chance that it would rain toys that could later be used for self-defense was slightly less than the chance that there would be a need for self-defense.

No one could say Fandom High wasn’t a learning experience.

Bruce found a good spot in the audience and watched. He was confident that if anything happened, the graduates would be able to handle things, so he was primarily watching as a true spectator as a change of pace.

George was nerving herself up. She could do this. If he rejected her, well, fuck, she was dead anyway. That really shouldn't make her feel any better, but strangely enough, it did.

And so, before she could chicken out, she dropped into the seat next to Bruce's.

"Let's go on that date," she said. "The one from ... the one we talked about. Before. I mean. If you ... still want to."

He had said in her yearbook that he did. This was not exactly difficult. Unless you were horribly, cripplingly bad at dating, which ... well. She was.

"Want to just go somewhere after the ceremony?" Bruce asked.

She could think of a hundred excuses not to, all of which were ways of chickening out. Which was exactly what she was trying to keep herself from doing. So.

"Let's," she said. "Pick a place, let's go."

"Caritas has alcohol, Devil's Nest has dancing," Bruce said. "I'm guessing you'd prefer Caritas."

"I'm not much of a dancer," she agreed. "I'm better at standing around making faces at people. Caritas, then?"

"Tonight in the lounge, then," Bruce said. "I'll get us a table."

"Okay," George said. "I mean, sounds good. Thanks. I mean ... oh fuck it you know what I mean."

"I do. And you're welcome," Bruce said.
