Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2011, Saturday Early Evening - Part One!

The ceremony was once again held at sunset for the benefit of the graduates’ less diurnal guests, but the lawn was well-lit with twinkling blue and gold lights draped across bleachers, stage, surrounding trees and specially-assembled trellises, giving the overall effect of a peaceful fairy grove. (Not, say, Las Vegas. Tasteful twinkling lights.)

The staff having taken note of every previous graduation including the most recent, the lights had been purchased from Acme Decorations Studio with a money-back No Coming To Life And Terrorizing Your Party Guests Guarantee... and there was a rather large cache of weapons stashed in a trunk behind the podium. The chance that it would rain toys that could later be used for self-defense was slightly less than the chance that there would be a need for self-defense.

No one could say Fandom High wasn’t a learning experience.

"It's too bad," Ramona reflected with a frown. "'Flowers' and 'Wayne' are so far apart, alphabetically. It sounds like you'd be a handy person to be near for the ceremony."

Because of course she wouldn't be doing any of that preparation. But she'd probably be fine anyway.

"I'm sure you'll survive whatever happens," Bruce said. "And there's always the chance that it'll be a strangely boring ceremony."

He wasn't counting on that possibility, of course.

"Yeah but it sounds like the odds aren't favorable on that and it'd be better to bank on th unexpected," she replied.

"I wonder how many of these seniors actually thought that way," Bruce said. "Aside from just the shoes, that is. I can't tell if any smuggled in weapons."

"We'll find out pretty soon, if you're right," Ramona noted. "Maybe they won't need it, though! Maybe the island will just act weird in some other way."

"I'd rather the island give them something to fight. At least that you can prepare for," Bruce said. "If it switches their genders, or makes them unnaturally horny? That would be even more uncomfortable for everyone."

Yes, those were both things that happened, Ramona.

Ramona just stared at him for a long moment before taking a stab in the dark and asking, "And were you a pretty girl, Bruce?"

"You'd better believe I was," Bruce said, giving a confident smirk. "But fortunately, that wasn't a graduation event."

"They could all just turn into little kids," she suggested. "That'd be cute, at least, and less uncomfortable. Plus, I've done that, so no shock factor for me! Everyone wins!"

"That was one of last year's transformations. Then they turned into animals, and then had to fight off the chimera," Bruce said. "So I think we'd be safe from any of those things."

"Damn. You know, I keep joking about Fandom Bingo but at this point I really should make a card, because I haven't turned into an animal or really had to fight much of anything yet," Ramona said thoughtfully. "That can be my goal for senior year. Possibly culminating in some weird-ass thing at graduation."

Bruce let a quick laugh escape. "If you don't make a card before I take off for the summer, I'll make sure you get one. Graduation will be the free square, of course."
