Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2011, Saturday Early Evening - Part One!

The ceremony was once again held at sunset for the benefit of the graduates’ less diurnal guests, but the lawn was well-lit with twinkling blue and gold lights draped across bleachers, stage, surrounding trees and specially-assembled trellises, giving the overall effect of a peaceful fairy grove. (Not, say, Las Vegas. Tasteful twinkling lights.)

The staff having taken note of every previous graduation including the most recent, the lights had been purchased from Acme Decorations Studio with a money-back No Coming To Life And Terrorizing Your Party Guests Guarantee... and there was a rather large cache of weapons stashed in a trunk behind the podium. The chance that it would rain toys that could later be used for self-defense was slightly less than the chance that there would be a need for self-defense.

No one could say Fandom High wasn’t a learning experience.

Yeah, of course Bobby was here, a piece of rolled-up posterboard tucked underneath one arm as he searched for a seat. He was torn between beaming proudly about his friends graduating... and frowning mopily about his friends graduating.

And at some point, a tall, dark-haired woman made her way over to him. She knew who he was, of course, from watching Sookie, but she didn't expect him to recognize her by any means. "You made a sign?" she asked, accent lilting as she gestured to the rolled up posterboard.

"For my girlfriend," he explained, goofy grin spreading over his face at the thought.

"For Sookie? May I see?" Claudine asked, smiling a little wider.

"Yeah, for-" Bobby started to agree and then frowned slightly as he realized just what she'd said. He concentrated on tightening his mental shields in case she was some sort of telepath. "Um, so... who are you?"

"My name's Claudine," she said, arching a brow at him though her smile didn't fade at all, and if anything, her expression grew a little more indulgent. "You're a quick one."

Bobby snorted. "Oh yeah, that's something that's said about me all the time," he said with an eyeroll. "Bobby," he added, giving her a bit of a side-eye. "If you didn't already know that."

"I did," she assured him, and added, "I'm not here to hurt anyone, you know. Sookie's mentioned me, hasn't she? I'm...a cousin, of sorts."

A pause, and then, "From the other branch of the family tree than the one who just passed. The other, other branch."

"Oh," Bobby nodded. And then, once it really clicked: "Ooooh. Um. Yes! She's said- not much? But some. Hi!"

"Hi," Claudine said easily, laughing a little. "I'm fairly new, so I wasn't expecting her to say a lot. But I did want to come over and say hello, since I recognize you quite well. I'd been watching Sookie long before she came to visit our world by accident last year."

Bobby... wasn't sure whether that was creepy or reassuring. Maybe a little of both? "Do you guys have some sort of... non-interference clause or something?" he had to ask, because honestly. There'd been a lot of times when Sookie could've used some fairy-powered backup.

"Something like that," she admitted. "I can interfere if we're going to lose her entirely. And I could boost her powers -- back when she needed the help, anyway." She slanted a look at him, adding, "Did she ever tell you about how she threw the chain around that man's neck, the night she was beaten so badly? That was me. And she came to me when the vampire drained her. It's not much, but we can't do everything for her." Claudine shrugged, and added, "Stories usually have much better fairy godmothers, I know, but we don't really work like that."

"Stuff never really is the same as it is in stories," Bobby agreed. He'd been on teams with demigods, he knew how that went.

"So what does the sign say?" Rinoa asked, unable to hide her curiosity.

Making sure he was okay, that came next.

"Oh, uh. Just, you know. 'Congrats Sookie'," Bobby said, unrolling it so Rinoa could see. It did indeed say just that. In blue and gold glitter. And with several exclamation marks.

...Apparently his tendency towards punctuation-mark abuse wasn't just for text-messaging.

"Awww, that's adorable," she said, taking it in with a smile. "I like all the glitter. It's festive."

"That's what I thought too!" Bobby beamed at her. "School colors and everything."

Yeah, hopefully Kate wouldn't mind finding glitter in every nook and cranny of their room for the next few months.

"Verrry nice," she agreed. "So is ... I mean, Sookie's not leaving right away, is she? I hope she's not."

"She's sticking around as long as the school will let her," Bobby told Rinoa. "I'm thinking of maybe hiding her under my bed after that..."

"We could get her a suite at the hotel," she decided. "Find her a job in town? Or is there vampire stuff she needs to get back to? I keep feeling like Squall and I need to be going back, but the world-saving bit is over. I hope."

"Mostly just college," Bobby said. "She wants to go, which- considering that when we first met, she was convinced she couldn't, I'm not about to hold her back from that, not really. I get that, though, about the feeling like maybe you should be there and not here? I usually try and arrange my classes so there's time for me to go home for a few days if I have to," he admitted.

"Quistis wants Squall to go back," Rinoa admitted, shaking her head. "He was supposed to be in charge of Garden -- the school? But he left it to her, and she keeps ... hoping he'll take it back again."

"In charge of a school, when he hasn't even graduated this one?" said the guy who still technically had legal guardianship over a bunch of kids, some of whom were barely younger than he was.

"He graduated from there already," she said easily. "We just came here for cover. You can graduate as a SeeD at, like, fifteen, I think. So long as you pass the exam. And Cid just up and left everything to him last year, when things got crazy. I kind of don't understand why."

Nobody did. There was an entire hierarchy in place, and Cid had thrown it out the window in order to put Squall in charge of things.

Of course, thanks to some screwy timelines, Cid had known that Squall was going to save the world, and had thought he could use the on-the-job training, but he hadn't exactly shared that with anybody else.

"Weird," Bobby said, shaking his head. "She can't, like, make him come back if he doesn't want to go back to stay just yet, right?" he had to check.
