Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2011, Saturday Early Evening - Part One!

The ceremony was once again held at sunset for the benefit of the graduates’ less diurnal guests, but the lawn was well-lit with twinkling blue and gold lights draped across bleachers, stage, surrounding trees and specially-assembled trellises, giving the overall effect of a peaceful fairy grove. (Not, say, Las Vegas. Tasteful twinkling lights.)

The staff having taken note of every previous graduation including the most recent, the lights had been purchased from Acme Decorations Studio with a money-back No Coming To Life And Terrorizing Your Party Guests Guarantee... and there was a rather large cache of weapons stashed in a trunk behind the podium. The chance that it would rain toys that could later be used for self-defense was slightly less than the chance that there would be a need for self-defense.

No one could say Fandom High wasn’t a learning experience.

Raven was there to see her friends graduate (especially one in particular). She told herself she wasn't going to cry.

Did it help if someone hugged her suddenly?

"Hey, you. I brought ice cream."

"Dinah!" Raven said, giving her a hug back with a happy smile. "Thank you, I think it will be needed."

Dinah squeezed her and said, "Given how mine went, I probably should've brought popcorn too. How're you holding up?"

...she really did have ice cream bars in her bag, next to dry ice. You never knew when you'd need it.

Raven glanced up the stage. Tahiri. Triela. Kennedy. Sookie. Jono.

"I am doing all right," she said. "I am proud of my friends."

Dinah nodded, and dug into her bag, bringing out a frozen key-lime-mousse pie slice covered in chocolate, offering it to Raven. "I'm proud of them too. It's still rough. A big change."

Raven accepted the pie gratefully. "Jono is leaving soon after graduation," she said quietly. She hoped everyone else would be staying for the summer at least.

"I'm sorry, hon." Dinah bit into her own pie slice and wrapped an arm around Raven's middle. "He's gonna stay in touch though, right? No breaking up, or disappearing?"

Raven nodded, leaning her head against Dinah's shoulder. "I will not allow him to do what happened in the future we learned not long ago."

The memories were fuzzy, but she still remembered some of the important bits.

"Good," Dinah said firmly. Raven shouldn't have to deal with that. She licked her pie slice and added, "I didn't like mine much either, but that means-- oh no! -- I'll have to keep calling you a lot, so we don't get out of touch."

"Of course," Raven said. "We have already kept in touch a great deal over this past year, and there is no reason for that not to continue."

"'Xactly," Dinah agreed. "You should visit New Gotham again. With Jono, if you want? And maybe -- oh, did Karla tell you, we were thinking of taking Kyle to Kaeleer? Would you want to come along too?"

"Of course," Raven said. "But do you think Kyle is ready for a place like Kaeleer?"

"I don't know... he's here this weekend. Just to see that there's more than just metas like in New Gotham," Dinah said, biting her lip. "And I have to get him used to the idea sometime, you know? Or he'll never believe me about other stuff." Like what happened with Priestly.

"That is true," Raven said. "And Kaeleer has not always been distressing when we have visited it in the past."

Just...most of the time.

Rinoa was circulating, looking for her friends, and had to stop when she spotted Raven.

"How are you holding up?" she asked.

It was hard enough, losing friends. If Squall were up there ...

Raven gave her a small smile. "Well enough," she said. "I am very proud of my friends for their accomplishments."

She just wished it didn't mean they had to go.

"Me, too," Rinoa said. "And ... they'll stay in touch, right? We're not really losing people if they'll still be in touch."

More or less. She hoped.

"Of course," Raven said, trying to convince herself as much as Rinoa. "Dinah is here today, and she graduated last year. We have spoken a great deal over the past year. So it is not as if they will be gone."

"And we have phones, and letters, and all the rest of it," she said. "Will ... Jono be able to visit a lot? Where is he going, exactly?"

Jono couldn't use the phone, unfortunately, but letters and texts would make up for that..

"He is going back to his old school in Massachusetts," Raven said. The thought of that state made her a little nervous, since that was the headquarters of Sebastian's church, but it didn't exist in Jono's world. "And yes, we will visit one another as much as possible."

"More school?" she laughed, easily. "Is this a college thing, or does he need more classes for some reason?"

"For learning to better use his powers," Raven explained. "With others from his world who are like him. One of his teachers is an older version of Emma."

She really hoped visits wouldn't be awkward.

"Oh, that's ... nice," Rinoa said, carefully. "Is she ... a lot the same?"

That seemed the most tactful way of putting it.

"I do not know, for I have not met her," Raven said honestly. She paused a moment, then added, "But I hope not, since the Emma here does not care for me or entirely approve of my relationship with Jono."
