Fandom High Graduation Ceremony, Class of 2011, Saturday Early Evening - Part One!

The ceremony was once again held at sunset for the benefit of the graduates’ less diurnal guests, but the lawn was well-lit with twinkling blue and gold lights draped across bleachers, stage, surrounding trees and specially-assembled trellises, giving the overall effect of a peaceful fairy grove. (Not, say, Las Vegas. Tasteful twinkling lights.)

The staff having taken note of every previous graduation including the most recent, the lights had been purchased from Acme Decorations Studio with a money-back No Coming To Life And Terrorizing Your Party Guests Guarantee... and there was a rather large cache of weapons stashed in a trunk behind the podium. The chance that it would rain toys that could later be used for self-defense was slightly less than the chance that there would be a need for self-defense.

No one could say Fandom High wasn’t a learning experience.

"Effy," Emma hissed, trying to get her attention while they were all lining up. "Where on earth is Peter?"

Oh, right. This. Shit. Amongst everything else, it had fallen off her radar. Thanks, Peter.

Effy hesitated, "He left." She'd been thinking maybe she should think of a better way of breaking it, but maybe straight honesty was the best she could do. "A few days ago."

"What?" she asked, looking utterly confused and more than a little worried. "When? Why?"

"Wednesday. Said something about being shit at goodbyes, and teary eyes, and not wanting to talk about writing postcards." That was about the gist of their conversation, anyway.

"He asked me not to say anything," she added. Even if she had wanted to say something, the last few days hadn't exactly been the sort where it would have even crossed her mind. "... I'm sorry."

"Wednesday?" She'd been sleeping off the events of Tuesday. He hadn't even waited to see if she was going to be okay.

Shock and hurt were apparent on her face for a brief moment before Emma regained her composure, the usual cool and unflappable façade taking control. "I see. Thank you, Effy."

Effy exhaled a humourless laugh. "You don't mean that." It was a shitty piece of news to have to deliver, and have to hear, and she was well aware of it. No one honestly thanked the messenger with that one.

"You could have lied, or tried to make me feel better about it," Emma pointed out. "You didn't. I appreciate that."

Well. She twisted her lips, and hitched a small shrug. "Apparently, I'm good for something."

"Not much for sugar-coating." It worked for some people, less for others. She'd got lucky, really, that it was Emma she was breaking this to.

Emma mirrored her shrug. "You're a good friend, which is more than I can say for my now-ex-boyfriend at the moment."

She was allowed to have a moment of bitter, here. She was eighteen and had just been dumped by proxy. Joy.

"He knew he was being a jerk." Not that that really helped, when he'd gone through with it. "Men. Fucking morons the lot of them."

No exceptions. Some might be idiots more sporadically than others, but-- Still idiots.

"Then he's doubly an ass," she said sourly. "Got plans tonight? I could use a drink after this."

Briefly, her eyes drifted towards the crowd, and her mum... "No plans."

At some point, she needed to talk to her. But considering what Effy planned to talk to her about, she was putting it off as long as possible.

"A drink sounds pretty fucking good."
