BWI Airport, Portalocity Port, Saturday Morning

Timing had worked in Bruce's favor this morning. After a long overnight flight from Japan, he was really early for the shuttle to Fandom. That was according to plan. This way he'd get to see how people came into the room marked "Fandom High," whether they were nervous, or excited, or annoyed at the very thought of having to go to school.

Those first impressions didn't necessarily mean anything, but Bruce felt they often gave a good insight into how his new classmates would react in a stressful situation. You never knew when that kind of thing might come in handy.

A tall black teenager dressed in rather worn out jeans and a hoodie stepped into the room carrying an overstuffed duffel bag and nothing else.

From the looks of him you wouldn't have expected that he had just stepped off a private jet owned by a prestigious law firm.

Gunn scanned the room and gave a curt nod before settling down in a corner of the room to check out any other students who might be arriving.

Figuring he might as well start his socializing right away, Bruce greeting Gunn. "Good morning," he said, settling into a friendly tone. "Since you're here, I'm guessing you're another new Fandom High kid?"

"Hey," Roy said, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees. "I'm Roy. You new, too?"

Well, the big kid looked scary, but... then again, so did Logan. Kurt gave him a nod. "What up, yo? How's it hangin'?"

He would have failed at sounding 'street' ANYWAY, but the thick German accent didn't exactly help.

"Hey, you know how further this school is?" Jacob asked Gunn, mostly because he was sitting closest, really.

A boy with floppy red hair, tall and muscular across the shoulders, but looking like he'd been ill or something fairly recently, entered the room. He had a duffel bag and beat-up, secondhand suitcase he dragged along like they were no big deal and a custom-made bag for archery equipment he treated like it contained precious cargo. Roy scanned the room, wondered why that one kid looked kinda familiar, and found himself a seat to wait for the shuttle in.

Bruce made note of much of that narrative before putting on a smile and approaching Roy. "Another Fandom kid?" he asked. "Nice to meet you."

Her aunts had sent most of Leia's belongings ahead, or there probably wouldn't have been room enough on the shuttle for all of it. Not that she wanted to bring that much with her, but her father's sisters never took no for an answer. Especially when it came to hair. As soon as she got to the school, these braids were going down.

For now, she waited for the shuttle to take her to Fandom.

Between the hair, the clothes, and you know, being the first girl in the room, Bruce was intrigued when Leia walked in. "Welcome to the waiting party," he said. "You're one of the fashionably early people."

Well, the clothes and hair were kind of different, but, "Hi, there," Roy said, dredging up a flirtatious look despite the fact that it was Way Too Damn Early. "Going to Fandom High?"

Slightly bent under the weight of the battered duffel bag she had over her shoulder, Dru pushed open the door to the room and made her way to a seat that gave her a view of door. She could hear her dad's voice in her head, "Never put your back to the door, girl. Always know who's coming and who's going. It'll keep you alive."

Dru dropped the duffel, took a seat and looked casually around at the room's other occupants.

It had been a stroke of inspiration, really. If you could reasonably call a pamphlet coming out of nowhere to hit you in the face while you were flying 'inspiration,' at least. Warren would. School on some island somewhere. A fresh start.

Sure, he'd have to hide his wings there, too, which would explain the long coat that he was wearing. But it seemed like a place where he could lay low for a bit. It wasn't like he was going to be going back home anytime soon, after all.

Armed with a duffel bag of clothes and a credit card in his pocket, Warren made his way into the waiting area, keeping his back to the wall and his eyes on the other students.

It was still odd, Bod thought, being able to walk so freely among those that were alive. The airport was a tangle of people, loud and alive, all wanting to make their presence known in one way or another.

Bod himself was traveling light, carrying one small bag over his shoulder and keeping it close. He didn't need much, he didn't want much.

For now, he was content to wait quietly, watching as new people joined the gathering group. School. It was something he'd tried once and was ready to try again. Bod was excited.

Kurt was disappointed that he hadn't been able to fly the Blackbird to Maryland, but then, landing a privately-owned military-grade experimental aircraft at BWI didn't really fit with the low profile he was trying to keep.

At any rate, he walked into the meeting area trying to look cool and relaxed, even though he was feeling nervous. He should have just stayed at the Institute.

To Jacob's surprise, he hadn't actually gotten any funny looks when he asked for directions ot the Portalocity Port. It still sounded made up to him, but whatever. He seemed to be at the right place as there were already some other teenagers waiting.

Jacob dropped his duffel bag to the ground and after the long flight in a too small chair, he was content to keep standing up. Hopefully the bus drive wouldn't take too long.

Claudia, dragging a suitcase bigger than she was (that may occasionally clank suspiciously), definitely didn't look too pleased to be here. "Resigned" was more the word for it. She looked around the room a little suspiciously, then dragged the suitcase over to the wall and sat on it.

Well, hopefully she at least wouldn't be the only new kid in town.

Dan was standing away from the crowd of people, fiddling with a bag of airplane peanuts. He wasn't being antisocial on purpose, it was just he was a little too used to not being accepted into social circles.

Somebody had definitely been glared away from one too many lunch tables in his day.

Marco strutted - yes, strutted - into the waiting area, sunglasses on and a rather large suitcase carelessly dragging behind him. He was rather tan for a January on the east coast.

If you were as nosy as Emmett Honeycutt, you'd wonder how a kid with six brothers and sisters living in a three bedroom rented house could afford the five bags worth of clothes he staggered into the shuttle lounge carrying. Sadly the answer was a lot less boring than the clothes: it started in Good and ended in Will. His family might be trash, but damn if he wasn't gonna be trash with style. On some planet. The planet of pink spandex.

The boy from the planet of pink spandex dropped his bags on the floor about three steps into the lounge (but politely out of the way) and started scoping out the territory. ...Damn. Nice territory.

It seemed like everyone else in the lounge was less than half Henry's age, he noticed as he made it across the airport to the place where he'd been told to wait for his ride to Fandom. (He'd taken a train from Chicago, then a commuter bus from the D.C. train station to the airport, and now he was waiting for yet another bus. The steps he'd go through to avoid driving himself or flying had added about a day to his journey -- but he was too used to that kind of workaround to register much mental protest at it.)

He popped in his iPod earphones, queued up a Ramones track, and sat on his suitcase, feeling very old and hoping no one would mistake him for a stray parent unable to let go.

It went like this:

There had been a portal. Through the portal came first a snowball, then a girl, and then a boy. The girl was holding a brochure in her hand for Fandom High - one, for the record, she had not been holding a moment ago.

There was a quick, quiet conference as they poured over the leaflet, and a distinct "I hate magic," from the girl before they separated.

The result was that the girl was now sprawled out over a few of the airport chairs, legs dangling over the end of the row as she re-read the brochure, occasionally watching people with open curiosity.
