Timing had worked in Bruce's favor this morning. After a long overnight flight from Japan, he was really early for the shuttle to Fandom. That was according to plan. This way he'd get to see how people came into the room marked "Fandom High," whether they were nervous, or excited, or annoyed at the very thought of having to go to school.

Those first impressions didn't necessarily mean anything, but Bruce felt they often gave a good insight into how his new classmates would react in a stressful situation. You never knew when that kind of thing might come in handy.

"I got tired of having tutors and decided to go for something a little more traditional," Bruce said. It wasn't really the truth, but it was close enough. "I ended up picking Fandom just because it sounded interesting."

"As long as it's interesting in a good way," Bruce said.

"Fair enough. So, you probably know more about the school than I do."

"Not much more," Bruce said. "But if you have questions, I can take a shot at them."

"All I got was one small brochure. You know if it's got a decent library?"

"I actually don't know that one," Bruce said. "I only know a little bit that wasn't on the brochure, and that was mostly the fact that there are some strange classes." Strange classes that could prove useful to him in the future.

"Yeah? Like what? I haven't gotten a schedule or anything, yet."

"I heard that in the past there were classes on anything from military history to swordfighting to applied science in addition to the more normal classes," Bruce said. He figured that third one might interest Claudia.

That last one did, in fact, interest Claudia. Science was way more fun when you were actually doing it. "Yeah? Maybe this whole thing won't be so bad after all."

"It sounds like a bit of a crapshoot, though," Bruce said. "I guess we'll find out if there's anything that will be fun in a little bit." Because Bruce was looking for fun classes. Really.

"Well, either way, hopefully they'll let us use any facilities thy set up for those."

"That would be very useful," Bruce said. "I don't have the experience with experiments that it sounds like you do, but it would be great to have someplace to do that kind of work."

"I'd appreciate that," Bruce said. "I'm sure the school would, too."

"I'm beginning to understand why the foster homes were scared by your experiments," Bruce said. It was a half-joke.

Well, she was trying to recreate the experiment that killed her brother. "What can I say? I'm a handful."

"But an interesting one, it sounds like," Bruce said. "I'm sure that counts for something."

"Well, I did once make a carbon monoxide detector out of an ionic air filter and an alarm clock."

"Really?" Bruce asked. He tried to work that one through in his mind. "I don't even know where you would start with something like that. This is just a natural talent, I'd have to assume? It doesn't sound like something that you'd be taught."

"Well, I did kinda grow up in a physics lab." And she was a genius. But she wasn't one to brag.

"I can see how that would help," Bruce said. "If you really dedicate yourself to something early enough, by the time you're our age, you can already be an expert."

This was the idea he was basically basing his life around.

"Especially if you have a really good reason for your dedication." Like figuring out where your brother went wrong. "And, well, not a lot of friends."
