Timing had worked in Bruce's favor this morning. After a long overnight flight from Japan, he was really early for the shuttle to Fandom. That was according to plan. This way he'd get to see how people came into the room marked "Fandom High," whether they were nervous, or excited, or annoyed at the very thought of having to go to school.

Those first impressions didn't necessarily mean anything, but Bruce felt they often gave a good insight into how his new classmates would react in a stressful situation. You never knew when that kind of thing might come in handy.

Roy gave him a polite grin and held out one hand to shake. If the bag hadn't given the game away his rather distinctive calluses just might. "Sure am. Roy Harper; nice to meet you, too." He hoped.

"Bruce Wayne," Bruce said, shaking the hand. "What kind of equipment is that you're carrying?"

He had a good guess, especially with the hand shake, but it was probably better to engage in small talk instead of just trying to deduce things. It made him seem 'more social.'

"Your parents do that to you on purpose?" Roy asked teasingly. "It's archery equipment. I'm. An archer," he said, kind of lamely since he realized halfway through that the dragging the equipment around made that kind of obvious. "Just as a hobby, not, like, competition-level or anything." The muscles and calluses suggested it was a little more than a hobby, but competitive success made you obvious. Like Ollie's beard didn't...

The smile disappeared at the mention of parents. He didn't have any other noticeable reaction, though. "I took some archery lessons when I was younger. It didn't really take for me."

Not yet, at least. He'd probably need to find an archery tutor in the future, just in case that skill could be useful.

The disappearing smile gave Roy a moment's pause, and he looked visibly taken aback for a moment. "Sorry, man, I know he's not the most awesome namesake to have," Roy said. Then he shrugged and said, "It's not for everyone."

"What are you talking about?" Bruce asked. "I wasn't named for anyone."

Maybe he was from somewhere they didn't have tabloids? "My mistake, man," Roy said, holding up his hands apologetically. "Where are you from? I'm from Star City," he offered.

"It's okay," Bruce said, even though he was likely to carry a silent grudge for a while. "I'm from Gotham City."

He wasn't sure whether or not somebody his age from Star City would be remember the infamous murders based on that information, but there was a chance of it.

Roy's brain broke a little as he processed that. "Gotham, huh? What brings you to boarding school?" he said with forced brightness.

The impulse to call Dick and shriek like a girl a lot was strong right now.

"I've been traveling the world for a while. I figured it might be a good idea to get back to a normal school and get some structure into my education," Bruce said. It was close enough to the truth.

"Depending on who you ask, it was probably a long time coming," Bruce said.

By which he meant Alfred.

"Yeah, I guess most teenagers don't get to do a ton of traveling." He totally meant Alfred, didn't he? He meant Alfred. Aaaaahhh.

"Probably not. But in my defense, I did have tutors the whole time," Bruce noted.

Tutors who taught him escape artistry, stunt driving, martial arts....

"My parents were rich. I'm just trying to put their money to good use in their memory," Bruce said. He figured that would give Roy some explanation for his reaction earlier.

Yeah, Roy had figured that out when this was Bruce Wayne from Gotham who'd been traveling the world and ow ow ow his brain.

He missed the drugs, dammit.

"Good for you, man. I'm sorry for your loss," said the kid who'd been orphaned twice thus far. Hey. He hadn't turned into Batman.

"Actually, yes, I am," Bruce said, appreciating the change of topics. "It's always nice to get a fresh start. It'll be tough adjusting to a regular school again, though."
