BWI Airport, Portalocity Port, Saturday Morning

Timing had worked in Bruce's favor this morning. After a long overnight flight from Japan, he was really early for the shuttle to Fandom. That was according to plan. This way he'd get to see how people came into the room marked "Fandom High," whether they were nervous, or excited, or annoyed at the very thought of having to go to school.

Those first impressions didn't necessarily mean anything, but Bruce felt they often gave a good insight into how his new classmates would react in a stressful situation. You never knew when that kind of thing might come in handy.

"That's very judgmental," Claudia said. "You're assuming I'm planning to go to class."

"I'm sorry," Jacob apologized and he held up his hands in surrender. "I'm sorry for assuming you actually go to classes when you attend school. My bad. I hope you can forgive me."

"This time," Claudia decided. "But only if you promise never to do it again."

"You're too kind. I promise I won't assume anything involving you and classes again," he said solemnly. "I'm Jacob Black, by the way."

"Claudia Donovan. You new around here, too, or are you, like, the welcoming committee?"

"New," Jacob said. "I don't think I'm the type they'd stick in a welcoming committee."

What with most people being wary of a 6"7 tall Native American kid and then they didn't know about the werewolf thing.

He wasn't making any threatening moves, so Claudia didn't much care about his height or ethnicity.

The werewolf thing mighta gotten a reaction out of her, though.

"Wouldn't know. I've never seen a welcoming committee before."

Turning into a bull sized wolf did make a certain impression on people.

"I honestly can't say I have either," he admitted. "I wouldn't mind if they brought food with them."

"Yeah, my flight didn't even offer any tiny packets of snack food."

"Had to pay for them," Jacob said, "but I had to connect in Atlanta so I just ate something there. Where were you flying from?"

"Minneapolis. Managed to land me a direct flight."

"My dad just decided this week that I should come here so the only flights still available were with stops," Jacob said. "I actually flew in from Seattle. I'm from La Push."

"I'm assuming that's in Washington." Claudia shrugged. "Unless Mrs. Frederic is, like, even creepier than I thought, she managed to land a direct one on pretty short notice. But Minneapolis is one of those, like, hub airports."

"I guess the travel gods were against me or something," Jacob shrugged. "Who's Mrs. Frederic?"

"The freaky new social worker who decided to send me here. I figured she was some kind of recruiter or something."

Jacob grimaced. "Did you get in trouble or something?" No, he had no problems asking personal questions straight off. At least he sounded sympathetic, it hadn't been his decision to go to Fandom, after all.

"I kind of figured everyone here did. This is some kind of juvie school, right?"

Jacob blinked and... "I hope not," he said, looking disturbed. "That could explain why my dad can afford a school on a frigging island."

"So you didn't, like, recently blow something up totally and completely on accident?"

Did a vampire-werewolf treaty count? Probably not.

"No," he said, frowning. "I'm apparently worrying my dad, but I haven't done anything wrong."

He paused.

"What did you blow up?"

Claudia's shoulders rose up slightly and she peered up at him through her hair. "My foster parents' bathroom."

"Ouch," Jacob sounded mostly amused now. "So what it an accident?"

"Turns out those particular chemicals have a fairly . . . unstable chemical reaction. Who knew?"

Jacob shook his head. "And they threw you in boarding school because of an accident?"

"It maybe wasn't the first time I'd managed to destroy private property."
