BWI Airport, Portalocity Port, Saturday Morning

Timing had worked in Bruce's favor this morning. After a long overnight flight from Japan, he was really early for the shuttle to Fandom. That was according to plan. This way he'd get to see how people came into the room marked "Fandom High," whether they were nervous, or excited, or annoyed at the very thought of having to go to school.

Those first impressions didn't necessarily mean anything, but Bruce felt they often gave a good insight into how his new classmates would react in a stressful situation. You never knew when that kind of thing might come in handy.

"Classy, huh?" Jacob chuckled. "Does that mean I'm going to have to dress up?"

"I'm sure they'll let you borrow a tie."

"Handy, I didn't really pack for formal occasions," he admitted. He packed pretty light really, not needing sweaters or the like made it a bit easier.

"See, now that was just silly of you. You never know when you might need a good formal outfit."

"I figure they've got shops on the island in case of emergency," Jacob said. "It's easier than having to drag a whole wardrobe with. They won't have uniforms, will they?"

"Hell if I know. All I got was a small pamphlet and the note that this place 'could be good for me'."

"That sounds a lot like the speech I got from my dad," Jacob made a face.

"See, people gotta at least learn to respect teenagers enough to, like, give us more information when they make life changing decisions for us."

In his father's defence, there had been some more explanation, but Jacob didn't much feel like getting into it.

"It would have been nice to get a say," Jacob agreed wryly, still annoyed at Sam for using the alpha. "Especially with exams so close. Stupid time to change schools."

"I'm assuming it's a new semester at this place. They probably wouldn't want a buncha new kids showing up right before exams."

"A new semester in May?" Jacob asked. "It does make sense. I thought I'd be the only one, but there's a lot of students here."

Claudia blinked at him for a moment.

". . . Yeah, it's January."

Jacob stared back at her. "April," he argued.

"January," said Claudia. "For a whole two days, now. Before that? December."

"April 29," he said and he fished his cell phone out of his jeans pocket to show her the time.

"January second," Claudia said, and she pulled out hers. "2010. Which explains why it's, y'know, twenty-six degrees outside. I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen in April around here."

"Is it?" he asked, because well... when you have a body temperature of 108.9 degrees, you tended not to notice. Which would be why he was wearing nothing but a t-shirt.

Wait.

"2010?"

See, Claudia just figured he was from the great white north. People up that way had different definitions of "cold". "It is. And yes. For . . . two days, now."

Sure, but he would have still worn a coat before.

"You're joking, right?" he asked. "This is some weird routine to make me think I'm crazy." Because it was working.

"I could ask you the same thing."

"No joke," he said. "It's 2006 for me."

He frowned.

"Hang on," he said and he wandered off to a newspaper stand.

The look on his face when he wandered back, a newspaper in hand... well, it'd be priceless to some. "You win," he tossed her the paper.

What the hell was going on?

Maybe the guy was hit over the head and spent the last four years in a coma. Poor tall, hot guy. "Hey, it's okay. The last four years were totally lame, anyway."

Now he did drop on down in one of the plastic chairs. "That's something." He supposed. He blinked. "I just got on a plane, how the hell...?" He didn't even know how to finish that.

Claudia shrugged. "Random time portal?"

She meant it as a joke. Poor girl.

"Are you supposed to notice going through those?" Jacob asked. "Like, a big blue puddle or something?" That's how it looked on television.
