Timing had worked in Bruce's favor this morning. After a long overnight flight from Japan, he was really early for the shuttle to Fandom. That was according to plan. This way he'd get to see how people came into the room marked "Fandom High," whether they were nervous, or excited, or annoyed at the very thought of having to go to school.

Those first impressions didn't necessarily mean anything, but Bruce felt they often gave a good insight into how his new classmates would react in a stressful situation. You never knew when that kind of thing might come in handy.

Claudia shrugged. "Random time portal?"

She meant it as a joke. Poor girl.

"Are you supposed to notice going through those?" Jacob asked. "Like, a big blue puddle or something?" That's how it looked on television.

". . . Stealth time portal?"

Jacob glanced up at her and then laughed. "Maybe you should invent one of those," he suggested.

Claudia offered a salute. "I'll see what I can do."

He chuckled. "Of course, that's just going to end up with us going into the past and accidentally screwing up ever being born," he said. "And then I get a headache if I try to figure out what'd happen next."

"The ole time paradox. It's a bitch."

"Yeah, so maybe you should quit while you're ahead," he suggested. "We're just going to have to decide that we need to stop you from inventing it to stop it all."

"And then I'll have to learn how to be a ninja to defend myself."

Jacob gave her an amused look. "I have no idea how that followed, but sure. Why not?"

"Well, I might have been following a conversation we'll have in the future. Before we come back."

"Does that mean I'll never get to find out what we said?" he asked.

"Nope. You've just gotta wait for it."

"You know I'll never stop wondering now if you're your future self who swapped places with yourself now," he warned her.

Claudia grinned. "Yep."

"Hey, no fair," he frowned at her. "You shouldn't be the only one knowing what's coming."

"Who said I was the only one?"

"Am I going to be knocked out by myself if I glance behind me?" he asked. Hey, at least she was distracting him from the time thing.

She was good at that. "Well, you can at least be pretty sure you won't give yourself brain damage?"

"I don't know," he said. "I might be pissed at myself or something."

"But you seem like the kind of guy who's smart enough to figure out that hitting your past self over the head that hard would suck for the future you, too."

Well, not really if you had super healing.

"Was that a compliment?" he asked with a grin.

"You know, I think maybe it was."

Jacob chuckled. "Awwww, you think highly of me."

"Well, you are very tall."
