BWI Airport, Portalocity Port, Saturday Morning

Timing had worked in Bruce's favor this morning. After a long overnight flight from Japan, he was really early for the shuttle to Fandom. That was according to plan. This way he'd get to see how people came into the room marked "Fandom High," whether they were nervous, or excited, or annoyed at the very thought of having to go to school.

Those first impressions didn't necessarily mean anything, but Bruce felt they often gave a good insight into how his new classmates would react in a stressful situation. You never knew when that kind of thing might come in handy.

"So you didn't, like, recently blow something up totally and completely on accident?"

Did a vampire-werewolf treaty count? Probably not.

"No," he said, frowning. "I'm apparently worrying my dad, but I haven't done anything wrong."

He paused.

"What did you blow up?"

Claudia's shoulders rose up slightly and she peered up at him through her hair. "My foster parents' bathroom."

"Ouch," Jacob sounded mostly amused now. "So what it an accident?"

"Turns out those particular chemicals have a fairly . . . unstable chemical reaction. Who knew?"

Jacob shook his head. "And they threw you in boarding school because of an accident?"

"It maybe wasn't the first time I'd managed to destroy private property."

"Okay," he rubbed the back of his neck as he watched her. "Maybe you should give me a warning when you decide to play with your chemicals?"

"I try to keep them away from other people." Claudia shrugged. "Science requires risks. And theory is boring."

"So what exactly were you studying when you blew up the bathroom?" Jacob asked, curious now.

"Ever heard of Georg Joachim Rheticus?"

"Um... I'm pretty sure I haven't," he said. "The most science I know involves engines."

"He pretty much predates internal combustion. He was a sixteenth century mathematician. Who could teleport."

Look, if she was going to say stuff like that, then he was going to stare at her.

"You just said teleport, didn't you?"

"Yep. Well, that's the story, anyway. No one's been able to successfully duplicate it, yet."

Jacob actually looked relieved. What with Roy talking about a guy from his future or past or whatever, he was allowed to. "And you were trying to duplicate it?" he realized.

"And I'm going to succeed."

He stared at her. "You sound sure about it," he remarked. Teleporting sounded like something out of a scifi movie or Galaxy Quest to him.

"I am. I'm almost there, too."

Jacob raised an eyebrow. "Do I get a demonstration if you figure it out?" Not that he was expecting it to happen any time soon.

"Sure." Claudia smiled. "I'll take ya some place classy."

"Classy, huh?" Jacob chuckled. "Does that mean I'm going to have to dress up?"

"I'm sure they'll let you borrow a tie."

"Handy, I didn't really pack for formal occasions," he admitted. He packed pretty light really, not needing sweaters or the like made it a bit easier.

"See, now that was just silly of you. You never know when you might need a good formal outfit."
