BWI Airport, Portalocity Port, Saturday Morning

Timing had worked in Bruce's favor this morning. After a long overnight flight from Japan, he was really early for the shuttle to Fandom. That was according to plan. This way he'd get to see how people came into the room marked "Fandom High," whether they were nervous, or excited, or annoyed at the very thought of having to go to school.

Those first impressions didn't necessarily mean anything, but Bruce felt they often gave a good insight into how his new classmates would react in a stressful situation. You never knew when that kind of thing might come in handy.

"Need help with that bag?" Kurt asked her. Because he was helpful like that.

Another knight in shining armor.

Except...What the hell kind of school had her father signed her up for Dru wondered. As more people arrived it was getting harder and harder to tell just who was giving off the feel of the Real World, but she was pretty certain that this boy was one of them.

"Thanks, but I think I've got it for the moment."

But she could be polite and do the small talk thing at least till she figured out if he was going to be a threat. "I'm Dru. You're another new student?"

Kurt nodded. "Ja. I'm Kurt." He edged closer, and looked around the room. "Believe it or not, I think EVERYONE in this room is a new student," he pointed out.

"I think you might be right about that," Dru agreed. "I guess they save the welcoming committee till we get to the school."

"In the meantime, we have to welcome each other," Kurt decided. "So, Willkommen!"

She was trying to be wary, but he seemed like a friendly sort. "Howdy and all that. I take it you're not from around here?"

"New York state," Kurt answered, doing his best to exaggerate his accent, because he thought he was funny. "Und du?"

"Here and there. But mostly down South," Dru replied, exaggerating her normally slight drawl.

"Mississippi?" Kurt asked. He hadn't been too many places in the South.

"There, Alabama, Lousiana," she listed. "A bunch of other places at one time or another. We go wherever dad's work takes him."

"That sounds AWFUL," Kurt told her. "Moving all the time, like that."

Dru'd never really thought about it one way or another. It was just the way things were. She was with her dad, that was all that mattered. "It wasn't so bad. Just when one place started to get boring, we'd move on to somewhere else."

"You don't really get to keep many friends like that," Kurt pointed out. He hadn't had any friends, himself, until he came to America, so he knew how important they were.

"I get by," she shrugged. He was right, but Dru'd long ago given up thinking about things like friends. It was too hard to explain the Real Word and why they kept moving on. She had her life and lived it. Wishing for things she couldn't have was a waste of energy.

"Ja, we get by," Kurt agreed with a sigh. "Hopefully, Fandom will be better, though."

"Maybe." Not that she intended to stick around long enough to find out. Five months, that was it. Then she was going home.

"Did you leave friends behind in New York?"

"A lot," Kurt replied. His first friends ever, in fact. "But one of them's here already, so that's something."

"So you'll have a familiar face then. That's good," Dru nodded. "I bet they'll be glad to see you."
