BWI Airport, Portalocity Port, Saturday Morning

Timing had worked in Bruce's favor this morning. After a long overnight flight from Japan, he was really early for the shuttle to Fandom. That was according to plan. This way he'd get to see how people came into the room marked "Fandom High," whether they were nervous, or excited, or annoyed at the very thought of having to go to school.

Those first impressions didn't necessarily mean anything, but Bruce felt they often gave a good insight into how his new classmates would react in a stressful situation. You never knew when that kind of thing might come in handy.

"Dru Anderson, fellow newbie. Nice meeting you Jacob." For the moment at least, that opinion could change if tried to kill her.

He saved the killing attempts for the leeches and she didn't smell like one so for now, she was safe.

"Same," he replied. "So where are you coming from?"

"Here and there," she said. "Dad moved around with his job so we never really stayed in one place for all that long." But the hint of a Southern drawl combined with a bit of an Appalachian twang would point towards the Southeastern US.

"Just now then?" he asked. "You had a long trip?"

"Only up for Alabama, so it wasn't all that long of a trip. It was," Dru told him, looking a bit sheepish, "My first time on a plane. Somehow it wasn't as glamorous as I thought it would be."

"Same," Jacob admitted. "I was hoping for some more space, but the flight was full and leg room's a bit dramatic," he said with a wry smile.

Dru was relatively short, especially compared to Jacob, she couldn't imagine how he'd fit into the seats when she'd felt so uncomfortable. "I hope the person in front of you didn't put their seat back."

"Not for very long," Jacob grinned. "I'll just be glad when we get there."

"I suppose," Dru shrugged. "I've never lived at school full-time. It's gonna take some getting used to."

"So where did you come in from? I doubt it's somewhere down South."

"La Push, Washington," he said. "So definitely not from down South. This is pretty much the furthest I've ever been."

"It's a long way to go," she agreed. "Did you leave family behind?"

Jacob nodded. "My dad. Well, my sisters too but Rachel's off to college so we don't see much of her. And Rebecca lives in Hawaii. What about you?"

"Just my dad. Which means he's going to be living on take-out for the next five months." Not that Dru was any sort of gourmet cook, but she could make the basics when she had to.

"At least it will make him appreciate it more when you're back," he reasoned with a chuckle. That sounded a lot like Bella and Charlie, and Jacob grimaced as he thought of them.

"Hopefully." And hopefully whatever she learned at Fandom would be enough to make her a better helper when they were out on the hunt.

"So what year are you?"

"Sophomore. You?" Jacob said. "I'm surprised there's so many people transferring schools at this time of the year, what with exams being so close. I thought I'd be the only one."

"I know," Dru agreed. "I'll be a junior. Usually I'm the only new one. This will be weird."

"Nah, there's plenty of people you can hide behind," he assured her. It'd be a bit harder for him.

"Generally I don't do much hiding." There was a big difference between hiding and keeping a low profile in Dru's mind.

"Well," he said slowly. "Then you can just take comfort in the numbers."

"Maybe, although I'm used to being a lone wolf myself," she admitted. "When you're not in one place long enough to break through the cliques, it's not worth it making friends."

Oh, he was definitely looking amused now. "Nobody ever tell you that wolves need their pack?" Jacob said. Even if they were annoying assholes sometimes and he wanted to kick Sam's ass for sending him here.

The taste of fake oranges and salt had faded, or at least Dru had managed to ignore it while they talked. But Jacob's amusement as the conversation turned to wolves brought it back. She'd helped her dad deal with werewulfen. It wasn't pretty and wasn't fun. They were vicious and deadly, not stopping until they'd made a kill. Somehow Jacob didn't seem like that. But something was up, she couldn't let herself forget that.

"I've read National Geographic," Dru Said, more warily then she'd been. "They need the pack to survive."

"Yeah, so might as well take advantage of the crowd then," he said lightly, shrugging a shoulder.

"I suppose I can do that. I'm just not sleeping in some pile of bodies when it comes time to crash tonight," she warned.
