BWI Airport, Portalocity Port, Saturday Morning

Timing had worked in Bruce's favor this morning. After a long overnight flight from Japan, he was really early for the shuttle to Fandom. That was according to plan. This way he'd get to see how people came into the room marked "Fandom High," whether they were nervous, or excited, or annoyed at the very thought of having to go to school.

Those first impressions didn't necessarily mean anything, but Bruce felt they often gave a good insight into how his new classmates would react in a stressful situation. You never knew when that kind of thing might come in handy.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Leia," Roy said, offering his hand, then belatedly wondering if her people, whoever they were, shook hands. "Where are you from, may I ask?"

"Alderaan," Leia said, holding out her hand as well. For a split second she waited for him to take it and kiss it, then remembered she wasn't playing princess here and grasped his hand to shake it. "You've probably never heard of it."

Roy tilted his head thoughtfully as he shook her hand. "I'm afraid I haven't, but my geography's not great and--" he grinned and made an educated guess: "My astronomy's even worse."

Leia laughed lightly. "It's very far from here," she said. "I'm not even sure what direction to point." She'd have to orient herself once she got to the school.

"I'm from California. It's on the other coast of this continent," Roy said. "A couple thousand miles thataway." He pointed vaguely west.

"How did you end up coming to school here?" Leia asked.

"That's a long, kind of depressing story," Roy said, "and I hate to be Debbie Downer on the morning of our very first day, but, uh, basically, I screwed up really good and my foster dad kicked me out, and I couldn't live on his girlfriend's couch forever." He winced. "I tried to make that sound less pathetic, I swear. How about you?"

"My father decided I was drawing too much attention to myself by openly criticizing the Empire," Leia said. "He thought some time away from home was a good idea for my own safety." She rolled her eyes.

"They really weren't kidding about the student body being all types, huh?" Roy said with a shake of his head and a chuckle.

"My father said that the island would be unusual," Leia agreed. "That people might not be so surprised to find I am from another world. I wasn't so sure until you said something."

"Yeah, there are a couple of aliens running around where I'm from," Roy said. "Like Superman and stuff. I mean. Not like I've met them or anything. I'm no one special." He was so bad at this part. He blamed Ollie.

"Superman?" Leia arched one eyebrow. "What's so super about him?"

"He flies and can lift, like, buildings and things, and he's saved the world a bunch of times," Roy said.
