BWI Airport, Portalocity Port, Saturday Morning

Timing had worked in Bruce's favor this morning. After a long overnight flight from Japan, he was really early for the shuttle to Fandom. That was according to plan. This way he'd get to see how people came into the room marked "Fandom High," whether they were nervous, or excited, or annoyed at the very thought of having to go to school.

Those first impressions didn't necessarily mean anything, but Bruce felt they often gave a good insight into how his new classmates would react in a stressful situation. You never knew when that kind of thing might come in handy.

A good looking guy, trying to be chivalrous to the new girl? Experience had taught Dru to be just a little suspicious. "I appreciate it," she said, a trace of her mixed Appalachian and Southern accent in her voice. "But I've made it this far, I can handle it till we get to the school."

"If you change your mind, the offer will still be on the table," Bruce said. "I'm Bruce, by the way."

"Dru," she replied, smiling slightly to make up for her refusal. "Are you the welcoming committee or another new student?"

"Well, I seem to be greeting pretty much everyone, but that's unofficial. I'm just another student," Bruce said.

"Who'll be student council president in no time, no doubt" Dru answered. "It'll look good on your college applications."

"That would be impressive, what with me being a sophomore," Bruce noted. "But I'm not that interested in student government anyway."

"I see. So if planning Homecoming and school spirit weeks isn't your thing, what is?" she asked. It was weird making small talk when she usually did her best not to draw attention to herself. But if she was going to be here for almost six months, which was a fairly long time to spend in one place by Dru's standards, she might as well be a bit sociable.

"If there's any charity work to do, I'll probably volunteer for that," Bruce said. "I don't think Fandom's very big on sports, but I have some interest in physical stuff. What about you? Are you looking at a shot at student council?"

He was a do-gooder, good for him. In their own way, Dru and her dad were do-gooders as well, keeping the world safe from all the scary parts of the Real World. "I doubt I'll be there long enough. The deal was one semester, I learn what they can teach me, and then I go home."

"It sounds like you're not a big fan of school," Bruce said.

"School's fine. I'm not a big fan of not being with my dad," Dru explained. "It's just the two of us, ya know? He needs me to look after him." To keep the guns loaded and to let him know when whoever he was dealing with had a touch of the Real World on them.

"I understand," Bruce said. He felt largely the same way about Gotham City after the death of his parents, to be honest. But he wasn't ready to look after it. Not yet. "But if he sent you here, I'm sure he'll be able to fend for himself while you're away."

"Oh he will. I just don't like thinking about him living on take-out for that long." But worrying wasn't going to change anything so she'd deal.

"So where are you from Bruce?"

Bruce couldn't help but give an actual smile at that. "Gotham City, originally," Bruce said. "But I've been all over the place for the past couple years."

Dru hadn't heard of Gotham City, but it was a big country. "Dad and I have moved around a lot the last few years. I kind of like it, seeing something someplace new every few months."

"Do you move so much because of his job?" Bruce asked.

"Pretty much. We go to go wherever he's needed," she explained. "When I was younger I stayed with my Grandmother at her cabin. But once she died, dad started taking me with him. I've lost track of how many schools I've been in in the last four years."

"I can relate to that," Bruce said. "Only for me, it's just been a large number of tutors."
