BWI Airport, Portalocity Port, Saturday Morning

Timing had worked in Bruce's favor this morning. After a long overnight flight from Japan, he was really early for the shuttle to Fandom. That was according to plan. This way he'd get to see how people came into the room marked "Fandom High," whether they were nervous, or excited, or annoyed at the very thought of having to go to school.

Those first impressions didn't necessarily mean anything, but Bruce felt they often gave a good insight into how his new classmates would react in a stressful situation. You never knew when that kind of thing might come in handy.

Dan was standing away from the crowd of people, fiddling with a bag of airplane peanuts. He wasn't being antisocial on purpose, it was just he was a little too used to not being accepted into social circles.

Somebody had definitely been glared away from one too many lunch tables in his day.

Being all aloof actually made it more likely that Claudia might talk to you.

"You gonna eat those peanuts, or just fondle them?"

Dan sighed. "Eating them is the plan. The excessive fondling is due to the fact that my hands are kind of sweaty."

Ew, Dan.

"Annnnnd that's kind of gross, sorry."

"A little bit, yeah." Claudia at least knew she wasn't going to be trying to shake this kid's hand, any time soon. "But at least you're honest."

"It's nerves. My hands are usually dry. So dry I should probably moisturize more often," Dan assured her.

O . . . kay then. "You're possibly the first guy I've ever heard bring up moisturizing in casual conversation. Or any conversation."

"Seriously?" he asked. "Is that good or bad?"

Claudia shrugged. "It's different. I'm Claudia, by the way."

"Dan," he said, nodding at her. Shaking hands didn't seem like a good idea right now. "You heading to Fandom too?"

"Nah, I just like hanging out in random parts of the airport with a giant, heavy suitcase." And being a smartass.

Dan stared for a moment. "...see, I'm from New York, I see weird things all the time, so I have no idea if you're joking or if you're just crazy."

"Well. I guess you'll just have to wait to find out, then."

Dan grinned. "Well I hope I figure out which one it is before you steal my shoes and use them as gloves or something."

Because crazy people did that, apparently.

"Considering you're wearing them, you'd think you'd notice someone trying to do that before they got the chance to use them as gloves."

You'd think that, but Dan was the same person who got his shoes and wallet stolen by Chuck Bass and then ditched in Queens. He was special.

"Some crazy people are very sneaky," he said. "I mean, they'd have to be, considering so many of them break out of insane asylums in movies."

"Because movies are always very realistic."

In contrast to Dan, Bruce was being extremely social on purpose. And that's why he approached the guy standing off to the side. "Are you waiting for the bus to Fandom, too?" he asked.

Wow, two people talking to him in one day. That was like a record or something.

"Yeah, yeah I am," he said. "You too? Wait, sorry, dumb question. Of course you are."

"I am," Bruce said. "Don't worry about it. First day nerves are allowed."

"Oh, good. I hope second day nerves are allowed too. And third day nerves. I'm kind of a nervous guy in general." Even more so right now since Dan could clearly see that this guy had more money than him. He had kind of a rich kid radar now after being at St. Jude's for so long.

"I'm sure you'll get used to it in a few weeks," Bruce said. "I'm Bruce, by the way."

"I'm Dan," he said. "Nice to meet you."

"Same here," Bruce said. "Have you been to a boarding school before? Most of the people here haven't."

"Um, nope, never," he said. "I just came from a private school, though. This place apparently has no uniforms so I already like boarding school better than private."

"That seems to be a popular sentiment," Bruce said. "Apparently people really hate uniforms."
