Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Nametag affixed to his chest, Norman kind of looked in bemusement around the park for somebody who looked like a Sidon.

What a Sidon looked like, he really couldn't say. They had to be at least half as interesting as the rest of this place, right? And maybe a little less judgey than his actual big sibling. He'd take less judgey.

Without really thinking about it, Theron had flipped the hood of his robes up protectively, the idea of having any kind of sibling had never really occurred to him before, and he wasn't sure he liked it.

Breq had been assigned a little sibling called Uma, and after putting on a nametag she stood waiting on the lawn, out of habit slipping into a soldier-like ancillary posture. She eyed the nametags of people passing by, guessing she would find this Uma eventually.

Cold? Pfft. Bobby wasn't terribly bothered by this, naturally. Hell, even if he hadn't been, well. Iceman. His last school had been a secret underground bunker in the middle of Alberta. Cold was totally fine.

This sibling thing was new, though. He'd never had one of those before. Unless one counted his older self, he supposed.

Molly was absolutely entranced by this whole gathering. She pushed her dark glasses close to her eyes, to continue her attempts at disguise.

The fact she stood away from the fire, wearing a yellow dress with no coat, was probably not helping. The cold didn't bother her anymore, so she'd somewhat forgotten the need for a coat. Still, she had her name tag affixed, and she awaited her assigned sibling with excitement.

The nametag they'd given him meant Theron could figure out which line referred to him, and the numbers were similar enough he wouldn't have any trouble finding the room.

As for the roommate, well, it wasn't like he'd ever really had his own room anyway.

Molly looked around, not quite sure what to expect of a person named Gratuity. It was a perfectly fine name, but did make Molly want to know everything about that person's parents. Waitstaff? Hotel workers?

Ah, to hell with it. Jono had seen too bloody many of these welcome picnics over the years to even care about wrapping his flames. Either people would take in good faith that he wasn't actually burning to death, or they'd try to douse him with the punch bowl.

Either way, he was here, rocking the fire, looking generally vaguely unimpressed with the whole thing.

Well. Not the whole thing. The bonfire looked nice, anyway.

Oookay then. Somehow, Sparkle had decided that doing this teaching thing again would be a good idea. So, here he was, looking a little bemused, clutching a cup of hot chocolate to his chest and wondering if it was too late to just say 'oops,' and bail on the whole entire thing.

He wouldn't, but he was going to wonder.

Well, well, well. Amaya Blackstone. A teacher.

There was a collection of words she never expected to be strung together. But then again she never expected to be in the business of anything that wasn't hitting hot steel with a hammer, either, so this year was just full of surprises for her. The cold didn't bother her much; she had a mug of hot cocoa (no frills, thank you, get those marshmallows and whipped cream away, but if anyone had a touch of whiskey, maybe...) and a bemused look on her face as she watched people interacting around the bonfire, very much satisfied to be more on the fringe.

This semester's welcome picnic seemed to have come out of nowhere. But that could just be holiday brain talking for Tony.

But he was there with a fancy coffee that he made because he got the best Christmas gift ever.

Zoe was bundled up as well as she could be, but she still looked happy to be here as she looked around for people.

There might have been an extra ingredient in her coffee making her extra warm, and she had the bottle to share in her coat, shhhh.

Brooke hadn’t been to one of these since spring of her senior year, and she’d planned on going for nostalgia’s sake.

And then she’d gotten something telling her about a teaching buddy, and then there had been some calls, and now there was Brooke, in a cute and highly fuzzy coat, Googling “what do you do in home ec” on her phone with a mild sense of panic about her.

Jenkins observed the students from the airport long enough to be reasonably certain none of them would somehow get lost and wander off before making it to the picnic, then went to get a plate of snacks and join the other adults in their usual gathering place.

Really, he was almost getting good at this whole "general socializing" thing again.

So, guess who was just glowing rainbow colors at this picnic?

If you guessed the Californian alien, you guessed right! Karolina stayed warmer that way, and also she was still in the testing phase of using Tony's solar lamp, so it was a good idea for her to use her powers and try and get a feel for how much it was helping.

She was also wearing a nametag that identified her as Karolina, Guidance Counselor. Come talk to your glowy counselor, kids!
