Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

He'd lived with someone (albeit not in the same room) who was both very literal and had knives in her hands, so he'd learned pretty quickly about the importance of clarifying these sorts of things.

"I've never shared a room with anyone before," he said. "I promise I don't snore or anything." The room would probably get a little chilly at times, though, sorry about that.

Uma was very sad to have left her swords back on the Isle.

"Me neither," Uma said. "Well, not really. I've had people sometimes crash in my room on the ship, but I've never lived with anyone."

Every villain kid sometimes had nights when they didn't want to go home, just like every villain kid sometimes had nightmares. It was one of those things that you just accepted, didn't talk about, and moved on.

"I don't know if I snore," she added. "I'm asleep."

"You lived on a ship?" Bobby said, clearly impressed. "Is that where you came from just now?" He'd noticed the damp-and-generally-bedraggled-ness, yes.

"Didn't quite live there," Uma said, since most of her time had still been spent at Ursula's shop, pulling double and triple shifts whenever Ursula didn't feel like bestirring herself and another of the staff had quit.

Which was a lot of days, unsurprisingly.

"But after I got it, I slept there a lot. So my crew always knew where to find me." Without having to dare the wrath of an angry sea-witch. "But, naw. My ship is still back on the Isle. I, uhh, washed up here. From the ocean."

She'd fallen asleep in the water, clutching some driftwood. Long story.

"Oh," Bobby said, absorbing all that. And then: "Aren't you cold?" it was December, and she'd just washed up from the ocean.

The ocean had kept her cold but not dangerously so for as long as she was in it, a gift from her sea-witch heritage Uma still didn't know much about. Since then, however...

"Pretty cold," she admitted, matter-of-factly. "I was walking before, so I noticed it less, but since standing still it's gotten chillier."

She'd never really had anything like a good winter coat back on the Isle. When the weather got cold, you did what you had to to stay warm (usually arson) and then did your best to stay inside once the killing colds started.

It probably didn't help that she was not only standing still at the moment, but standing still next to someone who radiated cold.

"Wanna borrow my jacket?" he asked. It could barely be called that, seeing as it was just a zip-up hoodie, but it was another layer, at least.

Uma looked more than confused for a minute, she looked downright shocked. "Why?" she asked bluntly. "Why would you let me borrow your coat? It's cold."

Oh, Uma. Stop letting people know how surprising human kindness was.

Bobby shrugged. "Well, one, it's cold out, but you're cold and wet, which is even worse. Two, cold doesn't bother me the way it does most people. Three, unless you like, throw it in the fire or something, I'll get my jacket back eventually, 'cause we apparently share a room now."

Those were good points. Uma thought about it, then held her hand out. "Gimme."

Beat.

"Please?"

She was trying?

"Solid B plus for effort," Bobby decided, shrugging out of the hoodie and handing it over.

Uma shrugged, then slipped the jacket on. "Back home, you take what you want and what you think you can keep," she said. "The Isle isn't real big on asking."

There was a song about that, too!

"Sounds like a real hoot," Bobby said dryly. "Where I'm from, we help each other out when we can."

"You must be from somewhere like Auradon, then," Uma said. "Explains the nice jacket."

...She was being sincere. Looking closely at Uma's clothing, it would be easy to tell that it had been worn hard and mended multiple times before its introduction to the ocean.

"Is that in Europe somewhere?" Bobby wondered. "I'm from Long Island. In New York."

"..Where?"

She recognized none of those locations. Not that Serpent Prep had focused much on geography.

"It's kinda... northish of here? I think?" Bobby shrugged.

Geography wasn't exactly his strong point, either.

"Well, who's the king or queen of where you are?" Uma asked. She figured that even if she didn't know where that was in relation to the Isle (or this island), knowing that much might make things easier overall. "Who was their villain?"

"You mean like... who's in charge of stuff?" Bobby wondered. "That'd be Professor Kitty, I guess. Technically. And we didn't really have one villian. It practically changed on a monthly basis, it seemed like."

"What?"

Uma was starting to wonder if maybe Breq had been telling the truth, because none of this made sense. "All the villains are locked away on the Isle of the Lost."

"... I'm sure they're not," Bobby said, shaking his head.

"...No, really, we are," Uma said, folding her arms. "Belle and Beast made sure of it. They went through, resurrected everyone, and shoved them all off to the isle."

It was canon, Bobby, canon.

Uma was talking to someone who'd been brought forward through time to live alongside his future self. So... what she was describing was not outside the realm of possibility, as far as Bobby was concerned.

Except...

"Okay, I know Hank's been all up in the magic stuff lately but I would have noticed if he'd figured out how to bring people back from the dead. And who's Belle?"

"Belle? The former High Queen of Auradon? Married to King Beast? Mother of King Ben?"

Her face was on a bunch of the money, not that much of that ever made its way to the Isle, either.

"Who's Hank?"

Yeah, that did not sound familiar to Bobby at all. So, he just countered with:

"Hank McCoy? Founding member of the X-Men? Codenamed the Beast?"

He was beginning to suspect they were from different realities, here. At least being an X-Man gave him some experience with that sort of thing?
