Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Nametag affixed to his chest, Norman kind of looked in bemusement around the park for somebody who looked like a Sidon.

What a Sidon looked like, he really couldn't say. They had to be at least half as interesting as the rest of this place, right? And maybe a little less judgey than his actual big sibling. He'd take less judgey.

Without really thinking about it, Theron had flipped the hood of his robes up protectively, the idea of having any kind of sibling had never really occurred to him before, and he wasn't sure he liked it.

Yep, she was climbing up onto a picnic table so that she could actually be seen, and she was hollering.

Ah, to hell with it. Jono had seen too bloody many of these welcome picnics over the years to even care about wrapping his flames. Either people would take in good faith that he wasn't actually burning to death, or they'd try to douse him with the punch bowl.

Either way, he was here, rocking the fire, looking generally vaguely unimpressed with the whole thing.

Well. Not the whole thing. The bonfire looked nice, anyway.

Oookay then. Somehow, Sparkle had decided that doing this teaching thing again would be a good idea. So, here he was, looking a little bemused, clutching a cup of hot chocolate to his chest and wondering if it was too late to just say 'oops,' and bail on the whole entire thing.

He wouldn't, but he was going to wonder.

"There might," Peridot replied, remembering the duplicate humans from the other week, "There are thousands of Peridots out there, after all. But I'm looking for one in particular."

She put her hands on her hips. Down on the ground not far off, Pumpkin came over to sniff at Theron's boots. Well, presumably she was sniffing. It was hard to tell, since she was a pumpkin, and all.

"I'm looking for the Theron that is a Shan," Peridot continued. "Have you seen them?"

The nametag they'd given him meant Theron could figure out which line referred to him, and the numbers were similar enough he wouldn't have any trouble finding the room.

As for the roommate, well, it wasn't like he'd ever really had his own room anyway.

Look, she'd only discovered mirrors within her time on Earth. And for a lot of that time, she hadn't even had a name for them.

Aaaaand then she'd met Lapis.

"So you're the Theron Shan I'm supposed to meet? Welcome to Fandom Island! I've been assigned to the role of big sibling for you while you settle in, here!" She paused, and then gestured to herself, still grinning. "I'm Peridot. I also haven't looked in a mirror lately."

... She was trying.

Yeah, that could be a challenge, with this one on the job.

"We're already off to a great start, then," Peridot enthused. Pumpkin, still by Theron's feet, barked her agreement. "Now, I've prepared a short presentation to assist you in adjusting to the island's eccentricities. Or, at least, what I've come to deduct are eccentric for the island."

Earth was weird, overall. All alive and organic.

"It's mostly just a numbered list. It starts with 'gremlins.'"

"Little green guys that run around biting people," Peridot explained, as though she didn't actually at least partly fit that description herself. "I'm told their venom is hallucinogenic."

She hadn't looked too hard into what that meant. She just figured it was unpleasant. Not that she had any issues with the gremlins, herself.

Less judgey he could do! So long as Norman wasn't going to be too judgey over the fact that there was a very large red shark man drifting toward him through the small crowd, slightly bent over as he tried to peer at people's name tags and read them to the best of his ability.

Of course, perhaps it would help that he, too, had somehow managed to affix his own name tag to his broad scaly chest with "SIDON!" written in big, bold letters. And, below it, in smaller letters, in parenthesis, "(the Zora Prince!)."

"Nor-man Bab-cock," he read carefully, blinked, and then immediately laughed. "Ah-ha! I have found you after all, Nor-man Bab-cock! It is I, Sidon!" And here he did his patented cheering fist pump, accompanied with a smile so bright it glittered, which would never, ever, ever, ever get old. "The Zora Prince! And your Big Sibling here at Fandom High! I am here to welcome you and to make sure you have an easy time becoming acquainted with this wonderful place filled with so many wonderful people! So welcome! It is absolutely wonderful to meet you!"

Well, well, well. Amaya Blackstone. A teacher.

There was a collection of words she never expected to be strung together. But then again she never expected to be in the business of anything that wasn't hitting hot steel with a hammer, either, so this year was just full of surprises for her. The cold didn't bother her much; she had a mug of hot cocoa (no frills, thank you, get those marshmallows and whipped cream away, but if anyone had a touch of whiskey, maybe...) and a bemused look on her face as she watched people interacting around the bonfire, very much satisfied to be more on the fringe.

Norman was... being greeted by a... a large red talking shark... who was even more cheerful than Neil.

He hadn't been certain that last part was possible, and it was the enthusiasm that had him blinking outright, before his brain even caught up to the shark bit.

Ah. So that was what a Sidon looked like.

"Uh, hi," he managed. Because sure, his first conversation since arriving was going to be super coherent, right there. "It's good to meet you, too."

He thought? His brain was still catching up, there.
