Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Inhabited planets tended to be that.

"Gremlins?" Theron repeated.

"Little green guys that run around biting people," Peridot explained, as though she didn't actually at least partly fit that description herself. "I'm told their venom is hallucinogenic."

She hadn't looked too hard into what that meant. She just figured it was unpleasant. Not that she had any issues with the gremlins, herself.

"Like really nasty gizka?"

No, gizka were the last thing Fandom needed.

"I... don't know what that is!"

She would no doubt love them if she did, though. One could never have too many gizka around.

Right up until you had way too many gizka around.

"Are they bipedal, four-limbed creatures, with big ears that stick out from the sides of their heads?"

A bit more like small, skinny gundarks, really.

"That sounds more like a gundark."

Correct that last bit of narrative, a gundark sized gremlin was the last thing Fandom needed.

That was the last thing anywhere needed. Nothing would survive with their sanity intact.

"Gundark, gremlin, they sound close enough," Peridot decided, waving a hand. "Either way, you'll know one to see one, I'm sure."

Possibly after being bitten once or twice.

That would depend entirely on if they found Shans as tasty as Skywalkers.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure I would."

Nobody was as tasty as Skywalkers.

It was probably the midichlorians.

"Well, good! Then maybe I didn't even need to warn you at all!" That wasn't how it worked, Peridot. "What else is on this list...? The layout of the dwelling area, a list of the teachers that I have experience and what to watch out for with them, a map of the town - I can offer a guided tour. We can take a rickshaw! - and what little information I've gathered about local holidays. They sometimes involve weird rain."

Well, Theron was perfectly safe, then!

"Lots of places have weird rain."

Not like this they didn't.

"Oh," Peridot replied, tilting her head a little. "I hadn't encountered rain at all before coming to Earth. I've just been taking the word of the locals for it."

Shows what they knew, right?

"So you're familiar with places that have a month where sugary confection falls from the sky at least once a week?"

...

"What?"

Theron was saying that a lot lately.

"Sugary confection," Peridot repeated. "Do you not have sugar where you're from?"

That was okay, Theron. Neither did she.

"There is sugar," Theron said slowly, unaware he was getting material to beat Lana in 'strangest thing that ever happened to you' competitions for years to come.

"And does it sometimes appear in the form of precipitate?"

Because if his answer was no, Peridot was going to be thrilled to find that it was weird after all.

Material for years, all Lana was going to be able to come up with was a stupid haircut.

"Not really?"

"Well, we had powdered sugar and marzipan both this month," Peridot said, proudly. "I had no idea what either one was, but I work in a library, and I did some cross-referencing of chemical compositions, and... I suppose I could have just asked somebody."

Little bit, 'Dot.

"Oh! And food just shows up randomly behind doors and things from time to time, too. That's not really about the weather, the weather's still a force all its own. How do you feel about sharks?"

"Sharks?" Theron was widely picking only the most alarming things to follow up on. "There are some on Manaan?" That had tried eating his more famous ancestors.

Theron's ancestors were probably delicious, considering what a dish Theron was.

At least until that stupid haircut.

"Well, there are sharks on Earth, too," Peridot replied, having no idea where Manaan was, and not particularly caring. "Sometimes they fall from the sky."

The haircut would be for his cover. That would be his story and he'd stick to it despite it being as stupid as the haircut.

"Don't they need to be in the water?"

"They do!" Peridot nodded enthusiastically. "They all died."

That part was said utterly flatly. Because sometimes Peridot's delivery could use some work.

"So there were dead, flying sharks?" Peridot's wasn't the only flat delivery.

"Well, no. There were alive flying sharks, and then they landed, and then they were dead," Peridot replied, completely straight-faced. "I think they did more damage just by smashing through things than they did with their teeth."

It was pretty easy to outrun a shark on land, after all.

Thereon thought about it. "They are a big thing to be landing on something."

Peridot gave a nod that was entirely too enthusiastic, considering she was about to say, "Right! They pretty much crushed half the town!"

But look, it was exciting to be reaching some kind of understanding with her new little sibling, even if it was about falling sharks.

"And that happens...often?"
