Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change, but the list had been posted for everyone to see at one of the tables:

411: Molly Squidpiddge and Gratuity "Tip" Tucci

Norman stared at the roommate listing for a good ten seconds before kind of leaning back, squinting a little, and saying, "Mara's a girl's name, isn't it?"

"It is," Mara agreed with a genuine British Imperial Center accent. "My name, even. I suppose it was too much to ask for a roommate-less final semester."

"Oh, uh," Norman turned around to blink at Mara, reaching up to run a hand through his hair.

It immediately flooped back up to stand on end again.

"Sorry. For what it's worth, I didn't really have any say in this, either."

He might have at the very least not picked a girl to room with. He was awkward enough already, thanks.

"And there's no point in arguing with the moose in the office," Mara said. "She's impossible. So. Norman--" she gave him an appraising glance, "--where-slash-when are you from?"

That wasn't a question he'd gotten, yet. He was starting to gather that this place was odd, but he hadn't figured it was time-travel odd. Though it would explain some of the clothes people were wearing. Sort of.

"I'm from... now? I think? When is now?"

He'd get to the 'where' part in a minute.

The nametag they'd given him meant Theron could figure out which line referred to him, and the numbers were similar enough he wouldn't have any trouble finding the room.

As for the roommate, well, it wasn't like he'd ever really had his own room anyway.

Jughead had kind of hoped he could just slip back into his old room and continue living there on his own. Looking at the list, it seemed only half of that hope had come true.

But he could live with that. A room was a room, and just over this past fall, he'd had worse living conditions than sharing a dorm room with someone else. He scanned the crowd for a second, then spotted what looked like the right name tag.

"Hey," he said, ambling over. "You're Theron?"

He hoped he was pronouncing that... if not correctly, then at least not offensively badly.

"That's me," he said, before feeling compelled to add, "it's a nickname."

He was still surprised he didn't have to fight anyone at this school to get them to list him under it, rather than as Forsythe.

Right, he hated socializing. That was the downside to shared living spaces. "So, uh, yeah, we're gonna be living together."

Well. That name left little doubt that he was in fact rooming with a girl.

Bobby looked around wide-eyed for someone named Uma.

Uma was still trying to figure out how her name was on the list to begin with. What kind of magic was at work here? Was this Auradon? Was this a trick?

She probably didn't make the best first impression, salt and sand crusted on her clothing, still a little damp and not at all dressed for the weather. Her braids had fallen out of the bun when the spell had ended and they swung madly in a cloud of teal and black and gray as she made her way over to him. "Bobby?" she asked, sounding more uncertain than she ever had in her life.

"Right, okay, sorry," Uma's somewhat literal response didn't give Bobby more than a moment's pause. "I meant, what's your name?"

There was a whole song to answer that question, Bobby! It was choreographed and everything!

"Uma," she said, a little pleased by how easily he'd rolled with her answer. "It says on some kind of weird magic list that we're roommates."

She didn't seem to have a problem that he was a boy.

Molly looked around, not quite sure what to expect of a person named Gratuity. It was a perfectly fine name, but did make Molly want to know everything about that person's parents. Waitstaff? Hotel workers?

This was an excellent start.

Grocery store worker who hadn't entirely known what the word meant, but those were good guesses, too.

Tip hadn't had a new roommate since Hanna had graduated and headed off to be, like, a grown up or whatever. She wasn't entirely sure how she felt about having to share her dorm room again. On the one hand, it was nice to have a space all to herself. On the other, she kind of missed having someone to talk to when things got quiet and no one was hanging out in the common rooms.

Either way, she managed a smile when she checked the list and saw Molly's name on it. "Squidpiddge" was practically Boovian. And hey, at least she wasn't rooming with a boy.

"Molly?" she asked. There weren't that many new students, so the odds of her guessing right, nametags or no, seemed pretty good.

"That's me," she said, smiling at the other girl. She too had her misgivings about sharing a living space, but mainly because her rudimentary methods of keeping her undeath a secret would be rightly quickly discovered by someone sharing her room.

"You must be Gratuity. Or... is Tip your preference? It was even on the sheet."

"Thank you," Molly said, fighting the urge to quick grab her reporter's pad. "I'm just Molly, and that's what my friends and everyone else call me."

Well, Seamus had a tendency to call her 'Molly-girl', but that was far from worth mentioning.

"Hopefully I won't be too much of an imposition. It's been a while since I had to share a room."

Though, it wasn't like Molly had to sleep. She just liked to, sometimes.

She'd learned to live with an actual alien, after all. In a car, no less. Tip was pretty sure by now she could live with anyone.
