Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"And there's no point in arguing with the moose in the office," Mara said. "She's impossible. So. Norman--" she gave him an appraising glance, "--where-slash-when are you from?"

That wasn't a question he'd gotten, yet. He was starting to gather that this place was odd, but he hadn't figured it was time-travel odd. Though it would explain some of the clothes people were wearing. Sort of.

"I'm from... now? I think? When is now?"

He'd get to the 'where' part in a minute.

Norman opened his mouth for a moment. And then closed it again. And then squinted a little. And opened it once more.

"Then I guess I'm from last year," he replied, feeling profoundly silly about saying a statement like that, yes. "Uh. From Massachusetts."

"That's from the United States on this planet," Mara told him, looking a little pleased with herself. She'd learned a lot in a few years! "You're in Maryland now. You knew that, right?"

That was her second time saying the phrase, 'on this planet.'

Okay then.

"Yeah, I did know that part," Norman replied, already wondering how the postal service would work if letters were being mailed to Grandma through time. And if Dad would even read them to her while she was in the room, if he could get a letter back now and then. "I made sure my parents had the address, just in case. You're, um, not from around here?"

His guess would've been the United Kingdom, but here they were, talking about planets.

"No, I'm from a different galaxy," Mara said easily.

Where they had cute redheads with British accents. Obviously. "A place called Imperial Center."

Sounds homey!

It sounded only marginally less homey than United Kingdom, really.

"I... I'm trying to be surprised," Norman said after a brief pause, "but I've already met my big sibling, and I'm not sure anything can throw me off after talking to him."

Sidon was a really pleasant guy!

He was also a seven-foot-tall bright red shark man.

"Who'd you get?" Mara asked. "There aren't too many non-standard humans around."

"I got Sidon, the..." Norman briefly considered doing the fist-pump-and-grin move that Sidon had used during his introduction, but wisely decided that there was really no way he could possibly get it to look half as charming. "The Zora prince. As far as I can tell, he's about the most non-standard human guy around here?"

"Oh, the fish-shark one," Mara said, nodding. "Yeah. That's pretty odd. Should've seen him skiing on the fall break trip."

"... Wow," he said, blinking. "I'm kind of sorry I missed that."

"It was pretty unforgettable," Mara agreed, smiling. "I might have pictures somewhere."

Because she was a good spy.

Fortunately, Norman was going to just assume that people took pictures of school ski trips for reasons including but not limited to, 'having a souvenir,' and possibly, 'maybe works for the school yearbook.' And he was going to smile a bit, himself.

"I think I'd like to see them, if you do," he decided.

"I'll look around for them," Mara promised. "So, what brings you here, or did you not know you were going to be here until ten minutes ago?"

"My Grandma thought it would be good for me," Norman replied, conveniently leaving out the fact that Grandma had been stone-cold dead for over half a decade, now. "So, that's what brings me here. I had no idea what I was actually getting myself into until about ten minutes ago, though."

"I think it depends on how badly to react to weird," Mara said. "You didn't run screaming from Sidon, so that's a good start."

"I have a pretty good handle on weird," Norman admitted. "At least when it comes to people. It's the time travel stuff that's going to take some getting used to."

"Uh," Norman said, tilting his head. "Both? All three? Time travel isn't something we really do back home. I'm going to be putting the wrong dates on all my paperwork for months."
