Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"It was pretty unforgettable," Mara agreed, smiling. "I might have pictures somewhere."

Because she was a good spy.

Fortunately, Norman was going to just assume that people took pictures of school ski trips for reasons including but not limited to, 'having a souvenir,' and possibly, 'maybe works for the school yearbook.' And he was going to smile a bit, himself.

"I think I'd like to see them, if you do," he decided.

That's because Norman was a nice, normal person and not a secret spy assassin weirdo.

"I'll look around for them," Mara promised. "So, what brings you here, or did you not know you were going to be here until ten minutes ago?"

"My Grandma thought it would be good for me," Norman replied, conveniently leaving out the fact that Grandma had been stone-cold dead for over half a decade, now. "So, that's what brings me here. I had no idea what I was actually getting myself into until about ten minutes ago, though."

"Oh, even if you thought you were prepared, you wouldn't have been," Mara said. "This place defies explanation."

"I'm beginning to get that impression, yeah," Norman admitted. "Have you got any tips for how to handle this place?"

"I think it depends on how badly to react to weird," Mara said. "You didn't run screaming from Sidon, so that's a good start."

"I have a pretty good handle on weird," Norman admitted. "At least when it comes to people. It's the time travel stuff that's going to take some getting used to."

"With people from the past or the future?" Mara asked. "Or the past but a more advanced civilization?"

Like her, for instance.

"Uh," Norman said, tilting his head. "Both? All three? Time travel isn't something we really do back home. I'm going to be putting the wrong dates on all my paperwork for months."

"Oh, the teachers are really used to that," Mara assured him.

"I bet," Norman replied with a little smile. "I imagine half of them are doing the exact same thing."

"Pretty much," Mara agreed. "I think you'll do okay. Are you all right rooming with a girl? My first roommate was a guy and it was fine."

"I... I think so? I've never really had a rommate before, ever, so if I mess up anything, it'll be less because you're a girl and more because I'm clueless, anyway. If I do anything too annoying, just let me know."

His Grandma floating into his bedroom to visit really, really didn't count as roommate experience.

"Oh, I will," Mara said. "I'm a fairly straightforward person."

Aside from the secret spy assassin thing.

"That's actually really reassuring," Norman confessed. And then paused and added, "And if you ever catch me just kind of talking to myself... um... just... let me know and I can stop if it bothers you."

Yeah, that didn't sound like a thing crazy people did at all.

And there went Norman, trying not to blush.

Mara arched up an eyebrow. "Sure."

And Norman kind of bunched up his shoulders and tried not to look half as stupid as he felt.

"Thanks."

Well. That had been going well.

"It wasn't as stupid a thing to say as you think," Mara said with a tiny smile. "Your face is kind of giving you away."

"Yeah, well, my face is a traitor," Norman replied, and then sighed, and then offered Mara a little, uncertain smile. "It isn't stupid to say? Really?"

"Only a little," Mara said. "I'll forget about it in no time, I promise."

Norman could handle a little stupid.

"I'm going to hold you to that," he decided.
