Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Molly looked around, not quite sure what to expect of a person named Gratuity. It was a perfectly fine name, but did make Molly want to know everything about that person's parents. Waitstaff? Hotel workers?

This was an excellent start.

Grocery store worker who hadn't entirely known what the word meant, but those were good guesses, too.

Tip hadn't had a new roommate since Hanna had graduated and headed off to be, like, a grown up or whatever. She wasn't entirely sure how she felt about having to share her dorm room again. On the one hand, it was nice to have a space all to herself. On the other, she kind of missed having someone to talk to when things got quiet and no one was hanging out in the common rooms.

Either way, she managed a smile when she checked the list and saw Molly's name on it. "Squidpiddge" was practically Boovian. And hey, at least she wasn't rooming with a boy.

"Molly?" she asked. There weren't that many new students, so the odds of her guessing right, nametags or no, seemed pretty good.

"That's me," she said, smiling at the other girl. She too had her misgivings about sharing a living space, but mainly because her rudimentary methods of keeping her undeath a secret would be rightly quickly discovered by someone sharing her room.

"You must be Gratuity. Or... is Tip your preference? It was even on the sheet."

"Tip's what my friends call me," Tip said with a nod. "And roommates totally count. Welcome to Fandom."

"Thank you," Molly said, fighting the urge to quick grab her reporter's pad. "I'm just Molly, and that's what my friends and everyone else call me."

Well, Seamus had a tendency to call her 'Molly-girl', but that was far from worth mentioning.

"Hopefully I won't be too much of an imposition. It's been a while since I had to share a room."

Though, it wasn't like Molly had to sleep. She just liked to, sometimes.

"And I haven't had one in a little while, either," Tip said. "I'm sure we can work it all out."

She'd learned to live with an actual alien, after all. In a car, no less. Tip was pretty sure by now she could live with anyone.

"Well I don't have too much stuff," Molly said. "And, hmmm, can I let you in on a secret?"

Tip shrugged and nodded. "Sure. Does anyone ever say 'no' when you ask them that?"

"Depends on the situation," Molly admitted. "But mainly yes, you're right."

She took a cursory glance around and leaned in a bit. "I think I might be from the past."

Tip nodded, not looking at all surprised. "That happens sometimes, around here. When are you from?"

"Nineteen Oh..." Molly trailed off for a second. "Seven. Sorry, had to think for a minute, with the new year coming up."

Or, rather, she had to think about how much time had passed since she'd died, time got a little weird for her when she was a mostly mindless zombie.

As would only be expected!

"A hundred and ten years," Tip said. "Wow, so you're gonna have kind of an adjustment period, huh. If you're not sure how anything works or what it is, let me know. I've gotten pretty good at explaining stuff."

"Thanks," Molly said. "The man who drove the bus mentioned a few things, but I've got a feeling I've got a lot to learn about. Good thing that's something I love doing."

"You're in the right place for that, then," Tip said cheerfully. "I've been here more than a year, and the island still always manages to surprise me."

"Well, hopefully you like surprises," Molly said, a sheepish smile on her face. "I'm full of them. So we can trade off. You help me with stuff, I can... do things for you. That works out, doesn't it?"

"Pretty much. And I'd help you out with stuff anyway. I try to be pretty nice to people. You know, who aren't total idiots."

"Live and let live, unless they're absolute evil," Molly said with a nod. "Always helps to be nice to those that others don't feel they have to. Those are the people that need it the most."

Tip raised her eyebrows in surprise, and nodded. "Yes. That's it exactly."

A little silver bug looking thing that had been on her shirt lifted off and buzzed around in the air, letting out a string of bubbles. Tip looked over at it with a smile.

"Bill agrees, too. He's my robot."

"Wow," Molly said, and she found herself too tempted and lowered her glasses for a moment to get a better look at Bill, before she quick pushed them back up. "I'd ask if he was steam powered, but that's probably not the best way to do things anymore, is it?"

"Not really," Tip said, marveling inwardly at the sight of those eyes, but deciding against saying anything about them. "I'm not sure how he's powered, actually. He was built on another planet."

That managed to get the most surprise out of anything Molly had heard so far this day. "Like... out in the stars?" she said, not so much in disbelief but in awe.

"I think Bill was probably just built on Titan -- that's one of Jupiter's moons. But the people who made him came from lightyears away. Like -- a couple hundred trillion kilometers." Even Tip had trouble wrapping her brain around distances like that, so she threw in a final "Way out in the stars."

"That's a really far distance," Molly said, also having trouble wrapping her brain around that. And she'd come from a special place full of magic that could only be reached from Earth by a breach between worlds.

"So people around here really are from unique and different places, aren't they?"

"As a general rule, yeah. I know people here who come from whole different universes."

"So people are used to other students being... out of the ordinary, then?" Molly asked, definitely hoping the answer was yes.
