Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"You're in the right place for that, then," Tip said cheerfully. "I've been here more than a year, and the island still always manages to surprise me."

"Well, hopefully you like surprises," Molly said, a sheepish smile on her face. "I'm full of them. So we can trade off. You help me with stuff, I can... do things for you. That works out, doesn't it?"

"Pretty much. And I'd help you out with stuff anyway. I try to be pretty nice to people. You know, who aren't total idiots."

"Live and let live, unless they're absolute evil," Molly said with a nod. "Always helps to be nice to those that others don't feel they have to. Those are the people that need it the most."

Tip raised her eyebrows in surprise, and nodded. "Yes. That's it exactly."

A little silver bug looking thing that had been on her shirt lifted off and buzzed around in the air, letting out a string of bubbles. Tip looked over at it with a smile.

"Bill agrees, too. He's my robot."

"Wow," Molly said, and she found herself too tempted and lowered her glasses for a moment to get a better look at Bill, before she quick pushed them back up. "I'd ask if he was steam powered, but that's probably not the best way to do things anymore, is it?"

"Not really," Tip said, marveling inwardly at the sight of those eyes, but deciding against saying anything about them. "I'm not sure how he's powered, actually. He was built on another planet."

That managed to get the most surprise out of anything Molly had heard so far this day. "Like... out in the stars?" she said, not so much in disbelief but in awe.

"I think Bill was probably just built on Titan -- that's one of Jupiter's moons. But the people who made him came from lightyears away. Like -- a couple hundred trillion kilometers." Even Tip had trouble wrapping her brain around distances like that, so she threw in a final "Way out in the stars."

"That's a really far distance," Molly said, also having trouble wrapping her brain around that. And she'd come from a special place full of magic that could only be reached from Earth by a breach between worlds.

"So people around here really are from unique and different places, aren't they?"

"As a general rule, yeah. I know people here who come from whole different universes."

"So people are used to other students being... out of the ordinary, then?" Molly asked, definitely hoping the answer was yes.

"Absolutely," Tip said. "It's a big part of why we all stick around."

"I really wasn't expecting any of this," Molly said. "I just thought it'd be a neat mystery to investigate. Turns out it's like this place was... made for me."

She beamed. "I think I'm going to really, really like it here."

"Reporter," Molly said. "So... sort of. I know, most would call it a pursuit of a story, but there's way more than just one story to this school and this island."

"Several dozen, at least," Tip said. "Just when you figure out one, you'll probably find another. We don't have a newspaper or anything around here, but I bet you might get a kick out of the daily radio broadcast."

"That's the thing with stories. One seemingly ends, and there's always another one starting," Molly said. "...They broadcast the news over radio here?"

"What news there is," Tip said. "Mostly it's just who hung out with whom. But it's pretty helpful when we get invaded by something."

Molly paused. "Can you repeat that?" she asked.

"Right," Tip said. "Sooooo, every now and then, someone or something shows up on the island and goes all evil and either tries to take over or tries to kill everyone. Sometimes both."

"...that's definitely dampened my excitement to be staying here," Molly admitted. "But I guess it's never been successful?"

"Nope. I don't think it's ever even lasted more than about a week." Tip hadn't been here long enough to remember the really long ones. "We always manage to band together and take them down."

"Well that does seem to make it all a little better, yes," Molly said. "What sort of things are attacking this place?"

She couldn't imagine what would attack a school. Not even the worst of the Resurrectionists would have... wait, no, they absolutely would have. Molly knew that too well.

"Well, let's see. There was the chaos demon who turned everyone into ponies, and a memory-eating monster world. That's since I got here about a year and a half ago. We've also had a hurricane full of sharks and a swarm of cryptids, but those weren't really invasions, per say."
