Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Cleaning?" Jenkins suggested. "I admit, I've never actually attended such a class, but it is certainly a part of keeping house."

Brooke made a sound something like a strangled grunt and put her phone away. “I don’t like doing that either,” she sighed. “Anyway... you were looking for me?”
livingartifact: (that's concerning)

"I was," Jenkins confirmed. "I'm Jenkins. Your assigned 'teaching buddy'."

He didn't actually do finger quotes, but they were apparent in his tone.
gobrookeyourself: (totally interested)

“Oh, hey! I’ve never had one of those before,” Brooke said. She kind of felt like a real adult here now. “What do you teach?”
livingartifact: (it was nothing)

"Zoology. It is my second semester teaching, so clearly, I'm an expert."

"It's more than most people get, case in point," Brooke said. "So, any weird teaching stuff I need to know about, expert? Not like, the 'gremlin bites will end you up on YouTube' or 'you're going to end up with a penis at some point' stuff. That I know."

Jenkins cleared his throat. "Ah, yes. You've been here at least that long, then. I suppose the most important thing is to just remember that your students come from an incredible variety of worlds. You'll likely find yourself having to explain things you've taken for granted on a regular basis, as well as provide some . . . accessibility tools, should your students prove to be much smaller or larger than your average human."

"I used to go to school here, so I get most of that, but... much smaller or larger? Like... how big are we-" She glanced around. "-oh, okay, I getcha."

"Indeed," Jenkins said. "Last semester, my shortest student was about three feet tall, and the tallest over seven."

Brooke decided she was going to have to do more about customization at the new store.

"I can deal with that. Bring on all the shapes and sizes and different timelines and alien races," Brooke decided. "Any problem kids I should know about? Teacher gossip?"

"None that caused any deliberate trouble last semester," Jenkins mused. "Yang rather likes to hit things, so if you have her, you may wish to work a battle or two into your syllabus -- ah. Have you thought much about your syllabus?"

gobrookeyourself: (sitting and listening)

"Cooking and sewing! And now cleaning," Brooke said. "I just found out I was teaching about ten minutes ago. I think I'm coming off pretty well despite the total freakout."

"That . . . is one word for it," Jenkins said, with great diplomacy. "I would definitely recommend a syllabus for you, then. If nothing else than to prevent some of the return panic the night before when you suddenly remember you have to teach them something the next day."

He'd totally never had that panic, nope, nosiree. That's definitely not why once he totally just swanned off from teaching and left his students a note asking them to do an independent study.

Jenkins sighed and gave her a small smirk. "Suffice it to say, last semester was the first time I ever had to structure my instruction in a long time."

Usually he just kind of lectured the Librarians when they were particularly stupid.

Brooke knew when someone didn't want to talk about something, and really, why push? "I'm probably going to take that to mean you trained people for the CIA or something, is that cool?"

"Something to that effect," Jenkins said, shaking his head with a sigh. His last run in with a government agency had resulted in him turned to stone and locked up like a weapon, after all. "You are welcome to make all the assumptions you please."
