Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Adventuring!" he replied with a gruff cheer. That's how you knew he was using his character voice. "So, maybe your class might be able to help mine out."

Even if she tried, Amaya wouldn't be able to help being faintly amused by the cheer and enthusiasm, so she didn't even try. "Now that's something I wouldn't have thought of," she said. "A cross-over ~~episode~~ class. I wonder if any of the kids'll be in both classes? I'll have to offer them extra credit if they use any particularly creative solutions in any of their adventures."

Her head tilted slightly. "How do you teach adventures, though? Don't they just sort of...happen?"

"Well, that's true. But we're teaching how to survive those things. As a team," he added. "You know, DPS and pulling aggro and that shit."

"DPS?" Amaya had to ask after a few failed attempted to think of what that might stand for. Dragon-Princess Situation? Dangerous Portal Slip-Up? Don't Poke Snakes? It was probably best just to inquire. "Aggro? Like a berserker?"

"Y-yeah?" he ventured. "Yeah. Especially since I don't think we have any healers on the island, they need to know how to fill in the gaps."

Like his team did!

"Man, having a competent healer sure must be great."

Poor, poor Merle. No respect to the cleric.

Amaya quirked an eyebrow.

"You know there's a clinic on the island, right?"

She hadn't had to use them yet because she was competent in her own right, but it seemed like a good option if you needed healing. What did she know, though?

"Personally, I like to just follow this one simple tip, though: Don't get hurt."

Voila!

"Yeah, but that's if you survive the fight," Magnus replied. "This is mid-fight heals. You know. If you had someone who actually knew how to do that. And not just cast Zone of Truth a lot."

"See, and that's why I don't fight, neither," Amaya said. "Happy to supply you with things to fight with, but I know my limits."

She shrugged. She was practical. To a fault, in some people's eyes.

"But," she offered with a faint smile and a lifted finger, "that's why people like you exist, right? Somethings tells me you don't hesitate to join a fray, Magnus, and I like that in a person. But what's Zone of Truth?"

It sounded...

....annoying as hell.

"Why, thank you!" He honestly sounded very touched by that compliment. "It makes everyone around the caster tell the truth if they botch their saving throw. Which is super annoying when you have a caper going on."

Saving throw? When she first met Magnus in the coffee shop, Amaya remembered feeling a rush of relief for someone who seemed to talk like the people she knew back in Daventry and Llewdor, but other times? It was like a different language, one that made it very clear that adventure games, while similar, were still an entirely different beast.

But even if she didn't know what he meant by that part, the rest was pretty understandable, and she recoiled back, lip slightly curled. "Awful! I'm an honest person, don't get me wrong, but I don't see why the truth needs to be anyone's business. I'm not too keen on magic users; where I'm from, it means they're either hacks or they're up to no good, but one casting a spell like that is just plain nosy."

It was that fucking Gary Gygax's fault!

"Awww, they're not bad. A lot of my friends are magic folks. And Merle's technically a priest, but the things we have seen that man do to plants..." He shuddered. Things could never be unseen.

"That," said Amaya firmly, holding out a hand, "is a stone that does not need to be turned. I guess I haven't been lucky on the magic end of things. The place where I grew up? Llwedor? Has this creepy old castle on a mountain that, like a revolving door, evil magicians, in and out, in and out, most of them with a really weird thing about keeping young male slaves and killing them off when they turned eighteen, so...." She sucked in a breath.

"And don't even get me started on Chester Hobblepot."

The man. Ate. FROGS.

"...are... are they still doing that? Because Taako has this cool staff that eats magic users we defeat in battle and I crave battle." He made it sound super cheerful too. "We can totally kill them for you."

Magnus? Craving battle? Nooooo.

"I think it's vacant currently," said Amaya, because the reboot really screwed the pooch on that particular storyline. "But I'll try to keep tabs on it for you and let you know if there's any suspicious activity reported.

She did smile faintly, though. "I think you and your friends would enjoy where I'm from, though. It seems one of the kingdoms always has something going on. Kidnapped princesses, evil magicians, sneaky goblins or treasure-hording dragons. Not so much at the moment, though, which is why I came here. Where I'm from is great, but it's death for the weapon-making business if there's no great big baddies to fight."

"Aw man, fighting a dragon would be so rad. The only times we've fought them have been illusory and during the live shows." Which made for good podcasting, but not so great epic adventure.

"If you ever get the chance," Amaya said, "you'll have to tell me all about it. But that means you've actually gotta survive it, deal?"

"Deal," he said, offering her a hand to shake.

He had to survive. It was in the epilogue.

And Amaya gladly took that fist with a strong shake. "Deal."

He better be true to it, too. She really didn't want to have to deal with any necromancers to bring him back just so she could rub it in his face.

Well, he knew a guy. But Barry Bluejeans probably would be busy at that point. He also had an in with the Raven Queen, so it was cool.

"And if I find any adventure, you can equip us. You're totally less creepy than Garfield."
