Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

She figured she should maybe stop by and see if she actually still had a job.

"Better," Verity said, with a little smile of relief. "The holiday home with my parents helped."

As had a cryptozoology date with the town sheriff, but that was maybe not for the first conversation since attempting to murder someone. "And the colony has forgiven me, soo..." She looked down into her pocket. "Isn't that right, Calliope?"

"HAIL!" squeaked the tiny mouse wearing a Barbie gown that had been neatly hemmed. Not by Verity, then. "There was nothing to forgive, Arboreal Priestess!"

Verity shot a wry look Zoe's way. "Apparently a little bit of light sacrifice can be waved away with judicious application of cheese and cake."

"ALL HAIL THE OFFERINGS OF CHEESE AND CAKE!"

"Later," Verity promised.

Zoe covered her mouth a little so her snickering wasn't quite as obvious. "I have to admit, I'd be placated with an offering of cake too," she said. "I'm sorry about whacking you upside the head and all. I was hoping once we got everything fixed you'd snap out of it."

"It was the only way to get me to go down," Verity assured her. "And I was trying to do much worse to you." Both personally and to the island as a whole. "It took a couple of days for it all to wear off, but I was nursing a concussion so it was going to be a rough time anyway."

Her smile turned into more of a grin. "And don't worry about that, either. I got my first concussion at five, falling into a pit trap my brother dug for a game of hide and seek."

Price children did not play hide and seek the way normal children did, no.

"Still, I'm sorry you got caught up in everything. Sometimes living here is a little dangerous to one's mental health," Zoe said. "I'm glad you're feeling better, and I don't hold any kind of grudge, if you were worried. You're not the first person who's lost their mind and tried to kill me, and I doubt you'll be the last."

Ah, Fandom. Zoe had just sort of accepted her fate at this point.

"That's the kind of mindset that would make you right at home with my family," Verity said with a laugh. "Most of the words of wisdom my grandma handed down were how many grenades were appropriate to bring to various occasion."

And the answer was never zero.

"Replace grenades with guns and that could be a meal with my family," Zoe said. "See, now we're getting to bond, and it's all thanks to things being strange. I try to find those little things to keep going."

"So one day, there's going to be a Price-Winchester family gathering and there will be more ordinance than people," Verity said. "And it'll all be thanks to a bunch of brain-washing slugs."
