Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"So now everything will be such a surprise!" Sidon offered cheerfully. "That's much better than overestimating and being terribly bored with everything. It's hard to imagine anyone being bored here, though, with so many interesting people and things that happen. I do get a little homesick, though. Homesick, but never, ever bored."

"I've only been here about twenty minutes, and I'm already pretty sure I'll never have to worry too much about boredom," Norman agreed, smiling. "What do people do around here, anyway?"

Whatever it was, he would probably just ignore it in favor of reading his comic books or watching a scary movie or something, but it seemed like The Thing To Ask, anyway.

"I personally do a lot of swimming," Sidon offered, though he knew the people here weren't nearly as into that as he was, "though I'm not sure what I'll do with myself as much now that it's cold. I can handle cold water, but I am not so certain about freezing! I will likely be training often at the salle here on the campus grounds or spending a lot of time in the library. It's a wonderful library; Big Sister Peridot works there some times, as does my very good friend Tip, and I've got a long way to go one my English reading. It's so funny! Spoken English sounds so very much like Hylian, but written, it's completely different! As far as human activities, the television sets in the common room seem quite popular, and there are a great many unique shops and restaurants in the town. I'm quite fond of the sushi place myself, and if you like animals, you should swing by the animal shelter where I work on Thursdays! There's never a shortage of things to keep one's self entertained. What sort of things do you usually like to do in your spare time, Nor-man Bab-Cock?"

"It's just Norman," Norman finally offered up, still smiling a little. "Please."

He paused and then added, "And in my spare time? I... I guess I like watching movies. And reading. Or sometimes I'll go out riding my bike, but winter isn't really a great time for doing that. Have you thought of learning how to ice skate? There has to be a pond or something that freezes over for at least part of the winter, that could be fun?"

"Oh, there's a few ponds," said Sidon with a chuckle. "I'm quite familiar with all of them. But I don't think I know of this ice skating thing that you mention. Ah! Perhaps you could show me! You could teach me something, just as I'm to teach you about this fair island! How wonderful!"

"I..." Norman glanced down at Sidon's feet thoughtfully for a moment, and then shrugged. They'd figure something out. "I think I could probably do that. Ice skating is when you put blades on the bottom of your feet and use them to kind of glide around on top of the ice. I've only done it a few times, but it's fun, once you figure out how to keep your balance."

Sidon stroked his chin a little in thought, trying to picture it. It sounded a little bit like skiing, actually, which he was...okay at, but he'd rather enjoyed it, and it was on water instead of snow (which was also technically water, but shh), and he nodded.

"I would love to have you teach me more about this ice skating, Norman, if you would be so kind as to show me!" he said. "But with a teacher such as you to guide my gliding, how could I possibly experience anything but a wonderful good time and perhaps even a new passion to help pass these chilly winter months until the spring breaks the ice and I may enjoy the warm embrace of the ocean once more?"

"Well... then there, now we have something to look forward to once the ice is thick enough that we don't have to worry about breaking through it," Norman replied, ducking his head and smiling. There was so much enthusiasm there, and it was just the slightest bit overwhelming, but at least Sidon meant well, and Norman had learned years ago to not judge a person based on the fact tha they were different all on its own. "And there are other things to do during the winter, too. Snowball fights, or building a snow fort... Mostly, uh, snow stuff."

Since there was generally a lot of it.

Sidon chuckled. "That would make a lot of sense," he said. "I look forward to this snow stuff, Norman, and I am excited to have you teach me these new things. I hope I may teach you some things, as well, and we will learn from each other. That is, after all, the main reason we are here, is it not? To make new friends and learn new skills to enrich our lives!"

"That is what school is for, I think," Norman agreed, flashing Sidon a brief, small grin of his own. "So far it looks like I'm off to one heck of a start."

A very unexpected one, but not in a bad way.
