Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"That I can't give you an answer to." Now Breq smiled. "As for portals, they aren't always obvious. I was surprised to find myself here too when I first arrived. As I said, you'll get used to it. Would you like something to eat while I tell you more?"

She gestured towards the picnic tables.

Uma looked at the picnic tables and stopped dead. She was starving, but that kind of food--that quantity of food--that quality of food--couldn't be for someone like her. That was Auradon food right there.

"Oh I get it," she said, trying to play it off like no big deal. "This is some kind of trick. Get the VK to believe all this weird stuff, get her to eat food, then call the guards." She gave Breq a thin smile. "Nice try. But that's kiddie stuff compared to what he get up to on the Isle."

She must have been more exhausted than she'd thought to nearly fall for all that.

The reaction told Breq a lot about Uma.

"I can understand that you don't believe me," she said. "I know that there's no way I can convince you. You're wrong though, but feel free to prove me a liar."

And the sad thing is, Uma didn't even realize how much it said.

"Oh yeah?" she challenged. "Why don't you go get some food then? So if any guards come over, they'll see you getting it and not me."

And either Uma would be thwarting a trick, or eating. Win/Win.

"Of course."

Breq turned and returned a while later with a full plate and a cup or tea. She offered it to Uma.

Uma took the tea with a look of profound mistrust. The only tea and coffee you could get on the Isle was brewed by the goblins, so she was a little leery of either beverage as a matter of course.

"What's...what's all that?" she asked, redirecting Breq's attention to the plate so she could steel herself for that first sip. "I mean, that looks like lettuce but it's not slimy enough."

"Only bad lettuce is slimy here," Breq replied, noticing Uma's reaction. "If you prefer it that way, I'm afraid it will take a little while to arrange it."

She had come across stranger preferences.

"I'm from the Isle," Uma said again, like that should explain everything. Where she was standing, it should. She kept poking through the items on the plate, expression skipping between questioning as she examined the food, to wary anytime she looked up, searching for anyone paying too much attention to them. "We get Auradon's garbage."

You know. To eat.

Breq had come across places like that.

"Do you prefer the garbage?" People often did prefer what they were used to. She didn't judge.

"People here would find this a lot tastier. Help yourself if you like. I can't find you anything else."

"Ew!" Uma physically recoiled. "No! It's garbage."

She just...didn't know anything else. Some things were recognizable, their trash counterparts just shriveled and hard or covered in mold, but other things had a tendency to break down completely. And still others never made it to the Isle at all, though whether it just didn't survive the trip or tended not to get thrown away was debatable.

"I'm just not sure what all this is." Like the round yellow discs covered in salt. What were they?

"No?"

Breq didn't find this strange, considering what Uma had just told her. She went on to give the name of everything on the plate, just to make sure.

Uma followed that along carefully, sometimes making small noises of surprise when something Breq said turned out to be a food she'd heard about before and just never seen. Still, those she tried to stifle, to seem less like a rube than she already had been.

"So, what are you supposed to be then?" she asked after the explanation. "Don't suppose everyone needs an introduction to food."

See? She was admitting she didn't know what stuff was. Now you couldn't use it as a weapon against her, Breq.

"I'm a student here. I've been assigned to be your big sibling."

Breq added a smile, but her voice was a little flat. She had no intention of using any of this as a weapon against Uma. She was supposed to protect her, after all.

There was literally nothing in Uma's life that would ever suggest such a thing could happen. "Why?" she asked, still suspicious, even as the food vanished from the plate at warp speed. "Been an only child for forever. What's a big sibling supposed to do for me now?"

"Answer any questions you might have. Make sure you make yourself at home, if that's what you want."

Breq wasn't going to push Uma, but she seemed like someone who wasn't used to trusting people, and Breq was going to at least try and offer her some reasons to do so.

"You probably have to pick your own food eventually, though." She smiled.
