Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

There really was just no getting around the fact that it was cold outside today as Fandom welcomed its newest residents. Food? Check. Nametags and lists for people to look at for their siblings and roommates? Check. Bonfire? Definite check, it was hard to miss in the center of the lawn. Temperature away from the fire? Around 40F/5C.

At least there was a lot of warm food and chairs by the fire?

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

//And those people are stupid,// Jono added, even though that part really went without saying. //And hopefully they were the first to get eaten.//

He kind of had this thing about cultish crazies.

"I generally assume that's their heart's desire, cause it's the only thing that makes sense," Verity said. "In which case, interdimensional snake entities have an impressive ratio of answering prayers."

She also didn't sound terribly broken up about it.

//And dumbasses are apparently delicious.// Jono shook his head a little. //I think a class about how not to get eaten by snakes from the wrong direction in the honeycomb wouldn't go amiss out here, no.//

"But it would boil down to saying, 'Don't be an idiot, no really,'" Verity pointed out. "I don't know if that would help. Once you start thinking that summoning a giant snake from another dimension will solve your problems, you're long past the point where being told not to be an idiot is going to work."

//Wouldn't be a bad way to weed out the students who would probably be best handled by tying them up and locking them in a closet until they stop being idiots, though.//

Jono was truly a gentle touch when it came to students.

... No, really, he was. He was just also a cranky ass, too.

"Is that your first piece of teaching advice?" Verity asked, grinning. "Lock them up in a closet until they stop being idiots? Because I'm suddenly worried about the number of available closets we have, even in a castle that size."

//Oh, believe me, I've been tempted,// Jono replied, a crinkle of amusement in the corner of his eye. //Shame the school doesn't do detentions anymore. I think they used to just randomly select students to serve time every few weekends on the grounds that teenagers are idiots and they all probably have it coming to them anyway.//

"It could always make a comeback?" Verity suggested. "On the other hand, do you want to give up your weekends to spend more time with the students?"

Jono, you know your answer is yes. Don't even pretend.

Hell. He couldn't pretend, even.

//... I'm the one idiot who actually misses teaching here enough to say yes,// he replied. And then he hung his head.

Verity laughed. "I'll make you a deal," she said. "Either of us have a student who really deserves it, I'll help you hold a detention on some Saturday. Deal?"

Jono looked up again, giving his fingers a snap and then pointing at her, a grin in his eyes.

//Oh, I like you. Deal.//

Verity grinned. "And here my mom worried about me making friends," she said, which wasn't true in the least. Friends were the last thing Prices concerned themselves with. They didn't need friends, they had family and trusted contacts. "Any other pieces of advice for a newbie?"

//Of course. Things like... it isn't what the students get up to in the classroom that you have to worry about, really,// Jono replied with a nod. //The worst bit is the getting to know them, starting to give a damn about them, and then watching them all run off to play sodding hero all the bloody time. Not just when it hits the island. When it hits them back home, too.//

Said Jonothon Starsmore, who had at one point been exactly that student.

"Shit," Verity said. "But that makes sense. I saw a bunch of students along for the ride in the fight." It would have bothered her more, then, but she'd mostly just been glad of the easy prey. "Wasn't there a class I heard about explaining that heroing is stupid?"

Don't trust in heroes. Trust in professionals.

//Mmm, we generally have something like that every few semesters. You think a bunch of teenagers are going to listen to some stupid teacher telling them not to get themselves killed? Teenagers know everything there is to know about everything, after all.//

"I still have a teenage sister living at home," Verity said with a tragic sigh. "Believe me, I know."

Antimony was...there was no good way to describe Antimony.

"So, about locking them all in closets...?"

//For their own good,// Jono agreed, nodding knowingly. //You need any help with that, let me know. They tend to be dificult to stack once you get three or four teenagers deep.//

"Sounds like we're setting up for other problems in that case," Verity said. "But I'm not teaching health this semester, so less my problem?"

She heard radio. She knew what these kids got up to.

//Don't look at me,// Jono replied, holding up his hands. //I'm teaching music.//

So, not their problem, no.
